Here's one I've wondered about for awhile. 1913 or 1914 with New Brunswick plates.

Jimi - is this the photo? "On the road with her family one month from South Dakota. Tulelake, Siskiyou County, Calif. September 1939. Photograph by Dorothea Lange." Congrats on 4,000 posts.

Investigating the scene of a holdup, RMSC photo. Post 2421 got me thinking about this, but Jimi's post was a movie scene and this was a real crime scene. 7th series Packard at left, and some A's.

Alright, picking it up from T-6's posts, let's see if it works this time. Thanks, T-6 & T-Head, for the aid!

Being my 4,000th HAMB post, I wish I could let this Dorthea Lange image from a California highway in late 1939 speak for itself. But I must THANK the great Shorpy organization one more time! Their membership submit historic photos from a plethora of sources, including their own family archives, ALONG with BLOG commentary that is riveting, to say the least. I think membership is free; and since I love these blasts-from-the-past, I'm going to FIND OUT today & join if I can.

Now, Lange was probably the most celebrated of several pro photogs detailed by the federal Farm Security Administration (a New Deal program) to document and publicize the plight of millions of Americans -- and entire families -- displaced by financial ruin during the Great Depression. The mother with strained expression above was a month out of South Dakota, the family hopeful of finding ANY better existence in California. I was grabbed by the Coca-Cola bottle as a baby water bottle, the flies on the baby's fingers, the Kayro Syrup box in back for some family belongings, and the blanket over the back of the truck to keep the direct sun off. 'Nuff said, except, THANKS again, Shorpy group! And, God bless the HAMB!

One of the Panama Canal steam shovels survived, and is in Nederland, CO. I saw a great documentary on its recovery and preservation a couple years ago (History Channel, maybe?). Impressive!
