Happy ending! My opinion is that from the sound of it, you haven't put enough miles on this to have done any damage to the trans. But do keep an eye on things. I might add, I say that with my fingers crossed for you. Drive it a bit, and for the next couple of weeks, crawl under and just keep a check on everything - bolts tight, leaks, things rubbing, etc. and hopefully, you should be good to go!
Glad this is over........and that YOU finally looked everything over... We have those socket head bolts in stock...many different sizes and use the **** out of them in tight places...and you are *****in' about 2 bucks each for bolts that should have been in there in the beginning?...........8 bucks and a socket and a REAL driveshaft...done..........I would have given you the bolts out of our stock. Now you can drive over and let me see what this fiasco really looks like. Mark P.S....did everyone know that ******man has a SMURF Blue Chevelle? Hope to see all of the Houston bunch in Nov. for the NMCA deal down there. Getchermotorsrunnin
mark: thanks.... i just might do that to test it out. i appreciate your offer to diagnose the truck vibration. thanks! sounds like a good plan. the guy from whom i bought the trans sent me the info from his owners manual and it says "atf". other forums have dealt with this issue and trans guys say, "atf". but now you've got me concerned. i asked Modern Driveline this question and i'm waiting on their reply. anyone else have any info on this?
If you know exactly what that trans came out of check the OEM recomendation for lube. I do know that a trans that uses ATF will not work worth a **** [snycros] with heavier oil. And I have not seen anything but ATF recomended for any T-5s.
Maybe your should read Modern Drivelines website once.... quote off of their page One last piece of important information. ALL World Cl*** T-5 use ATF oil and NOT heavy gear oil or Redline MTL! All NON-World Cl*** T-5 use 70 wt gear oil. We recommend high quality Synthetic oil as it lasts a long time and over a larger operating temperature. It is important to change the oil in your transmission based on how you use the vehicle. If the vehicle is your daily driver then changing the oil every two to three years is fine. However, if the transmission sees regular track duty and pushed hard, then once or twice a year is in order. When we rebuild transmissions, we can tell when the oil has been changed often as the parts are much cleaner with less over all wear. There is no filter inside the manual transmission only a magnet at the bottom to pick up the metallic particles in the oil, the only metallic parts in a transmission is the gears or bearings. Oil is cheap, transmissions are not!
**** Dragsta, I hate to confuse the issue, I had the same pile of conflicting info to wade through................The guy that built my NWC trans said 70W and another trans shop I talked with insisted ATF was the way to go.............I went with the builder's recommendation based on my own research which I posted earlier and it's been 3 years now, no probs. 89 GM trucks show as NWC http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cat...verhaul_kits/borg_warner_t5_overhaul_kit.html The tag number from your post 1352-192 and the br*** synchros also point to NWC ............ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=467015 check the tag number here as well ........... http://614streets.com/Worldcl***t5.html ........but if your sure it says ATF in the Owners manual, well your call, go with what ya know !!!
good job tracking this down, and thanks for following up with an ending to this mess, all to often threads like this never finish and were all left hanging, thanks and i wish you lots of luck with your ride.
modern is about the ONLY place online that recommends 70w gear oil. EVERYWHERE else says "ATF". my trans came out of an 89 S15. borntoloze: i agree. i'm sticking with ATF in my NWC. it probably wouldn't hurt a NWC to add a little 70W to the ATF though because i may be hauling heavier loads than the s15 truck from which this trans came. for now though, i'm not going to worry about it. currently i'm more worried about damage to my trans from that bad installation. i'm going to find another T5 and keep it as a B/U.
is this truck for sale now? ... its HAMB famous ... searchining for next HAMB SPELLBINDING DRAMA THREAD .. RIGHT NOW
The biggest difference in the NWC to WC isn't that the NWC uses bushing, it is gear to shaft contact, with oil grooves to help lube the gears, ATF is too thin to do this. The WC uses ATF because of the fiber material on the blocker rings (same as clutch material in a automatic. The NWC uses a solid br*** blocker ring with ribs to help cut through the thick oil. Modern is not the ONLY place that recommends 70wt. Alldata.com and MitchelOndemad5.com both state 70wt for the NWC. BTW heres a few more that recommend the 70wt.... http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...888-how-i-d-your-t5-choose-correct-fluid.html http://blacksheepnormand.tripod.com/id20.html Heres a place to help you id yours as well http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Borg-Warner-T5-ID-Tags.htm
Since I'm being question in private, I guess I'll tell ya what I do for a living. I teach this **** day in and day out in a high performance university. Over the course of 1 year I have over 100 T-5's apart, so ya I do know a little about what I'm saying. Hell I can take one apart, syncros and all BLINDFOLDED and put it back together in just a little over an hour. I know this trans like the back of my hand. I have personally been to Michigan at Tremmec and talked to the guys there about this, the Tremmec manual says ATF because Tremmec never made a NWC. Borg Warner did. You might all want to read this, then tell Flat Ernie he's wrong as well http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171291 Do what ya want I'm done trying to help.
shizz: i've been around and around on this very issue. my conclusion is that it probably wouldn't hurt in a hot climate like texas to do a 50/50 mix of ATF and 70W. having said this, the owners manual for the truck from which my trans came, says "ATF". also, it had ATF in it when i bought it. the rebuild master from www.badshoeproductions.com says: but there's that caveat again; "normally" . WTF?! i think since i live in a hot climate, i'm going to mix in a little 70w in my NWC T5. i don't see how it can hurt...
no i'm not going to mix.... i did however message flaternie and contacted some others on the net about NWC oil. i can't believe that the manufacturer can't tell us what to put in the damned trans! they keep saying "consult your owners manual". i guess they're afraid of lawsuits....
borntoloze: i have to agree. my trans came from a high mileage S15 and it had ATF in it when i took the cover off to inspect it looked great inside. so obviously ATF works very well in these transmissions. until i absolutely positively find out otherwise, i'm sticking with ATF. i'll call the dealer tomorrow anyway just to see what they say. i also plan on draining that fluid soon and refilling to see if any damage was done with that ****py trans install.
Hell, we're not nearly finished here yet, we've yet to cover Electric to gear drive speedo conversion, calibration, gear sets and tire diameters, let alone shifter choices ............ Stay Tuned
OH ****! i took the truck for a spin tonight and the vibration is BACK!...........not really,, i just wanted to give borntoloze a thrill. can anyone suggest what i can use to seal the gaps in my cut floorboard and deaden the sound before i put in some carpet of some kind?
