That car was in Car Craft . Its nice seeing the whole car, the magazine article dosent show enough of the car. Unbelieveable. I always liked this car.:D I think it was a real young guy who had it.

Thanks, great to see these photos. I also do remember the Car Craft article and that those pictures do not do the car any justice. These photos are very nice. Very much appreciated!

I believe the CC article said that a '61 Dodge rear window was used.

Wow...I had heard stories and had seen a few faded pics of Hank's cars, from TeddyP, but those shots are new to me! Very talented builder...so sad he gave it up.

Awesome photos of an awesome car! Did your father take photos of any other customs as well?

Somewhere he has pic's of the sam barris merc when tommy lee first got it. They used to cruise together. I'll see what i can dig up.

  21. Marvin Lee had a 57 plymouth with Chrysler fins in 57. I loved that car on the streets of Pasadena. have never seen a photo. this one in the post reminded me. both are great customs

I remember being at Hank's shop and seeing the car in person. Is that the car that eventually had the fins taken off ? I was about 10 years old back then and it blew me away to see a "real" custom. Did Tommy or Donny Pitt have a hand painting it ?

I can't be certain, but I think that may be two different cars. One has '58 Fury trim and uses '58 Plymouth tail lights. The other uses '57 Belvedere trim and a completely different C-pillar. I guess it could be the same car through an evolution.

I've seen some chopped '50s Mopars, some good, most bad - but none looks better than that gold one!! That is sweeeet!

I believe I have a picture of this car.

At one point he had a chopped 58 or 59 dodge (maybe plymouth?). I believe it was a dark gold with packard tail lights.

    Hank Blank's Plymouth is gorgeous!

From what my father tells me, he lent (or sold) the car to a friend, who got drunk and crashed it and was killed. He never did another car again.

And they are two different cars. one a 58 fury, the other a 57 belvedere.
Interesting note, it was another friend backing out of a driveway in a 57 plymouth that caved in the left 1/4 panel on my dad's merc. This was in 63/64. they tried to get parts from the dealer, but they were on back order. Tried the junkyard, but all the cars that he saw the 1/4 was unusable. Someone kept pestering him to sell him the car, and he did.
