  1. Sounds like a personal problem to me. Should have shut up and went along your way while you had the chance.

I put shoulder harness in all my cars, Forget about the laws. I ride my family in my car so I worry about there safety. People that don't wear them say they trust how they can drive. What about the other half wit on the highway, some cant' see, most can not drive at all.

No, my car does not have them. Why is it legal to smoke or drink?, both of those activities can kill you as easily as an auto accident. It's legal to smoke or drink because it can be taxed. The only reason seat belts are mandatory is because someone realized that it could be a huge revenue generator to fine (tax) the people who dont wear them. The Gub'ment doesnt care about your well being only what they can get out of you.

  5. I put sholder harneses in the jeepster, with the roll cage.

But how would I go about fabing the upper mount on tin, in my 50 sedan?

  6. If it is a post car (sedan) you can reinforce the B pillar and mount the upper point on that.

As for open cars, the Blue 32 RPU that Mike Key built in England (American Rodder Mag from the late90s) had a nice way of making the 3 point belts work and be pretty much hidden.

I'm just happy my car has a front seat in it.

  8. Me too...

That's the whole deal right there! Revenue! But the question was do you have them NOT do you think I should have them!!! If it didn't come from the factory with them, I aint putting them in! I've managed to stay alive for the first 62 years without them, I'll just take my chances on the next 62 thank you. They also tried to make it mandatory to have them on motorcycles, how would ya like that? O.k., I'm done with that box (soap) next...

  9. Our roadster is a blast but I know it's really about as safe as a motorcycle. And I've ridden on the street for years. NO SECOND CHANCES! Considering our roadster feels about as safe as a cycle I wanted seat belts. Looked and looked and finally found a set from Beams in Okie City. Plain lap belt with a cool chrome lift latch - no plastic. The male side has a retractor and the set up is really handy. BUT, I'm still not totally satisfied. Still hope to get a shoulder harness set up for the extra safety.

  10. PARR Automotive in OKC sells the chrome vintage belts as well.

In my youth [17 in 1966] and in a 64 Falcon head on into a 55" chevy I vented the windshield with my head, I was a passenger..100 plus stitches and lucky to have kept my left eye..Still didn't [felt restricted..dumbass, huh?] wear the seat belt in my daily drivers till CT did the seat belt law..Funny, as soon as I had to [as when I raced my car] belting up is a natural even when in a back seat..So having seat belts [on] is good for only those who are wearing them, they don't make you a sissy or macho..They don't make us look like dorks, most of us already look like dorks..I looked like a munster till the scars faded away...

I didn't wear em until I started racing, After strapping in with a 5 point harness for a while I felt naked without a seatbelt on the street. Stopped racing years ago but still intall three point belts in everything I drive. Sure, we're all going to die someday, but why not improve your odds? I wear a helmet on the bike too. I'm so used to it that it feels weird if I just ride the bike in the driveway without it.

This brings up a good question. I'm O.K. w/ seatbelts in a rod, but I've always understood that they should be bolted to the body, not the frame. That way, if the body mounts tear loose, you're still strapped to the seat, not the frame.

And on the same subject, in a non-race vehicle, should a roll bar be bolted/welded to the body floorboards, instead of the frame? If the roll bar is the upper anchor point for your belts, once again, it seems like you should be belted into the car and not tied down to the frame.

A while back, someone had posted about a wreck in a T-bucket, where the car body and seat shifted forward, but the frame and the seatbelts bolted to it did not, producing some dire results for the driver.

Anyhow, points to ponder... Kinky6

I put lap belts, and a 4-point cage, into my 55 Chevy truck. These shitboxes are tin cans compared to newer cars. No way will I allow any of my kids to ride in it without some crash protection.

Yeah, screw seat belts! Those are for pussies! I'd rather be thrown clear of the wreckage. Here is a gruesome example of not being reastrained. I didn't start wearing belts regularly until I moved to TX. Lots of scary shit on the roads these days.

My cage is bolted to the truck cab floor structure, not to the sheetmetal, but tied to the rails that bolt the cab to the frame. I did this so if we take a hit, the cage doesn't simply tear away from sheetmetal.....it has to also tear away from the rails that give the cab it's strength. I wouldn't tie it to the frame, for the reason you mentioned.

And no to race-style harnesses. They are too restrictive for street use and as such, too dangerous, imo.

It seems like some of you misunderstood my previous post. Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying that seatbelts are a bad thing, I am however saying it shouldnt be anyones business other than the driver/passenger weather they are used or not.

lap belts for me. they do keep you in your seat. imho a shoulder or 5 point type belt is just over-kill. the structure of the car is such that it's not gonna do any good in a major roll-over or t-bone situation

In my truck I have 3rd row seats from a newer Tahoe. They are not high backs so they don't look too bad. They have built in shoulder belts in the outer seating postions and a lap belt in the center. My kids ride in the truck with me, including my 2 year old son in his car seat. I would not risk their lives for the world.

  26. Lets put this into the experience side of things. Anyone hit a concrete Bridge at 70 MPH? I did, had a belt on, it was 1991. I would be dead if not for the 3 pt belt.

'36 has three point belts, so does the '51 wagon. '48 convert has lap belts, and the Diamond T will be getting 3 points. The steering column for the DT, while original in the cab, has two U-joints and a sliding double D shaft under the hood, so it's collapsable.

  28. I believe that you ought to do whatever comfortable with.

I don't use belts in older cars. I've never been in an accident when I've been driving, but I just started 54 years ago and I'm still running fast and crazy with the lights out.
my daughters and grand daughters won't let their kids ride with me unless I add air bags. where do you draw the line on safety??

You bet!...... I have lap belts in my coupe and three point in my pickup.
I wouldn't build a car without them. My '33 pickup primer rod will have belts.
