Anzac Square, Brisbane - 1937. (In the late 1960's I would have been seated just behind the window 3rd from left on floor 2. :D. The building is still there today, but, the upper floors have been converted to "inner city living". The cars have changed and the trams are no more.)

  22. Was John Wayne making a film down there as I wouldn't think a civilian would be allowed to wear a uniform.

My thoughts exactly. Its an interesting photo considering he never served in the military.

Because of his old football trick knee (and other factors, e.g., Republic Pictures), the Duke wouldn't have been in the regular U.S. service anyway. But he did do a lot for morale with his films at the time. Films released during the war averaged one a year and were "Flying Tigers," "The Fighting Seabees," "Back to Bataan" and "They Were Expendable." The cut of the uniform appear quite similar to the general's, so I think it's an Australian loaner for a publicity "photo-op." Nothng more.

Oh, his birth name was actually Marion Robert Morrison. Trust me.

Marion Morrison was never in the military....he was either turned away for medical reasons or hardship excuse depending on what sources you believe. He often portrayed military characters, and may have dressed up for good will appearances......if that IS Morrison................
