Vintage shots from days gone by!

The best part of new car show at Cobo Hall was downstairs where the customs and rods were. If you were showing a car down there you got a chance to look before the crowds came. Most people didn't get down there. It was a big deal each year to go see all the new models when they came out.

RoadKillontheWeb, hey buddy! Good pic of the
MoPar " Highway Hi-Fi " !!! Best one I've seen,
matter of fact! These early sound systems fea-
tured canned music and played little records that
only turned at 16.5-rpm -- half of a big 33 record!
I think even Jay Leno only has one or two records
for his. They are THAT scarce. The one shown is
in a '55 or '56 DeSoto, probably a Firedome, judg-
ing from one clue I see.

Fiat128, I'm glad you found this pic. I'd HEARD
about it, but never saw a pic of the actual event
at the beach. This took place in the days before
NASCAR, and for this race, it was true STOCK
factory-equipped cars. SO, one team entered
TWO of these Lycoming V-8s with FACTORY
superchargers! (Ab Jenkins attested these
would do 100-mph on a straight!) They both
ran like striped-ass apes and in front of the pack
-- UNTIL the sand ate up both superchargers.
Both Auburns had to drop out. Sorry I do not
remember the actual year, but it was BEFORE
NASCAR was formed. Maybe we can check the
early racing thread???
