Customs Kustoms Illustrated # 26...another knockout issue!! Congrats to Ian Berky and....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rusk, Aug 9, 2010.

  1. As usual, Luke Karosi gives us another kick-*** issue full of traditional customs.

Congrats to my homey, Ian Berky, for getting the well-deserved write up on his full-custom '51 Chevy...I'm sure this is just the first of many features we're going to see on this guy's builds.

Rik Hoving blows us away with his custom knowledge and dissects some excellent vintage photos. He also gives us a write up on JarzenHotrod's beautiful '54 Lincoln that graces the cover of this issue.

There's coverage of this year's West Coast Kustoms Crusin' Santa Maria, customs of the L.A. Roadster show, and a whole lot more. So if you haven't seen it, grab yourself a copy...you'll be happy you did.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Kustoms Illustrated, although I've tried.....haha.

    Good job guys.

    Bryan

    Thanks Bryan,

Glad you enjoy the Old Custom Car photo articles.

Luke has put our a realy great issue again, and I'm proud to be part of it.
As some of you might know I have been doing a few articles for Luke in the past, and will continue doing so aslong as he allows me to do so.

For this issue I was very proud to be able to work on the article on Johnny Jarzen's 1954 Lincoln article.
When I create the articles for Luke I do most of the work, writing, lay-out photos (where I can) and Photoshop work, and supply Luke with complete pdf files ready to print. Luke and I are both on different systems. I'm on Mac using Indsign, and Luke is on PC using XPress. In the past this has caused a few minor problems which could always be "fixed" in time before the magazine was printed.
But unfortunately not this time. On the 54 Lincoln article a few things went wrong, and some of the material from my print ready pdf files where lost in the XPress translation... (yeah I know bla blad digital bla bla, but something got lost and I feel I need to show it here, thats at least the best I can do)

When I started to write the article on Johnny's car I knew I wanted to do something about the use of the special gold powder that he used in the paint. The gold powder that Barris and other customizers in the late 40's and early 50s already used and which was a real important aspect of the built of this car.

Well from the beginning getting a good photo of the gold powder was causing trouble and as Johnny stated the Gold powder photo was doomed from te beginning. And it sure was. The compled photo of the bottle of gold powder is missing from the printed version. The photo was made by our own Kevan Sledge just moments before the deadline ended. Print pdfs where created and there was no reason for the photo to fail... but it did.

I cant show how the page looks now since I dont have a scanned handy (I'm on vacation right now) but I can show you guys how the pages should have looked like.... and sorry for the rant, but if something like this happens I just feel bad about it.

Here is the complete page how it should have looked.

And here is an enlargement of the print file with the gold bottle. (thanks to Kevan for shooting the photo.

When it comes to printing...and digital page builds, plan on "Murphy" showing up...

But thanx Rik, for the article...I haven't read all the way thru it yet, but I didn't see any "where" or "were" transposed in it.

Luke. Another great issue. Please don't overlook Ed & Judy Banes 56 Ford mild kustom. Very nicely done. It's the type of kustom anyone could build. Roger Jetter did a great job with the photos and story. Great magazine.

Thanx Doug, Ed's been a kustom fanatic from his high school days...has had a long string of them...he's currently building a '55 Olds. Ed simply doesn't read the HAMB or post here so no one knows him, but he is hard core kustom.
