Hi all, I have been searching lately but couldn't come up with exactly what I am looking for. I have a 1933 ford front axle that has been dropped about 3" no reproduction ****. It has the 2" height wishbone mounts and the perch pins are 36.5" apart, on center. I was told it is a 33 and i do believe that it is. I am looking to get a reverse eye spring, but I am not sure how 46" or 48" comes into play or how much shackle to add to the spring length, etc. I was told that a model A spring would work but that the eyes are smaller diameter? Are the shackles the same? I have to buy shackles, perch pins, and leaf pack as this is just a bare axle that i picked up. I am looking into these springs: "The Magnum 7-leaf reversed eye spring is for '28-'34 Fords. Spring comes with Poly Ride for use between the spring leafs for a better ride. 46" axle width is 29-1/2". 48" axle width is 31-1/2". Available in steel or chrome. Made in America." Also, I have on hand 1938 spindles (actually a complete 38 front end). These should work as long as I get king pins that are for the year of the spindle, correct? Anything wrong or bad about using them on this setup? I don't know enough about the differences between spindles to know their differences.... thanks!
37-41 Ford spindles are the traditional hot rodder's choice. They may require a little heating and bending to clear the dropped axle. And, if you use split front wishbones, the arms will need to be dropped. This is basic hot rodding and it has been discussed many times here. Some 32 and all 33 to 36 front axles are the same. Any spring from 28 to 34 should work fine in an "over axle configuration." Posies offers springs with reversed eyes and a lower arch which help bring the front end down. 46" and 48" sound like king pin to king pin widths and are not used to determine spring width. Use the 36.5" spring perch boss to spring perch measurement. Posies has a table on their web site that will tell you the width spring that you need. http://www.posiesrodsandcustoms.com/posies-catalog/
New Age Motorsports is there in CT. I got my '34 front spring from them. It has hidden teflon between the leaves not pucks like Posies. http://www.newage-motorsports.com/ Smokey
What frame is it going in? I ask because camber/caster matters, when you are setting it up keep it in mind to check. things get moved when axles drop. There was a great post a while back about setting caster at the cross member. Since you don't have history with the axle, I'd check it with a magnetic angle finder, they are $6 at harbor freight. Might save you trouble of transferring kingpins/ spindles if it needs to be reemed and sleeved first. .02
If you already have a stock non reversed spring for the 33, you can reverse it yourself if you search hamb for the tech thread. Also, if using 37-41 spindles and don't yet have bones, and will be buying bones instead of hairpins, try to find 35/36 bones. They have more room under them so you won't have to bend the steering arms as much as 32/34 bones. They are for 2" boss
If you plan on running fenders ,You will need a smaller axle ,Im mentally and physically changing mine right now .I ordered a 46 axle and a 29 spring .I have the same set up as yours on my truck and the tires hit the fenders ,If you use your original perch pins The shackle bushing will need to be turned down .31 and a half is what you need.........
