Projects 59 El Camino.. Build Pics

  1. Definitely, come on out & we'll go for a cruise.. no problem!

After washing a bunch of the cars, this morning.. I got to the inner bed side panels. Just a couple more holes to weld up, an I'll be good.

    Like downtown.. all ground down!

I think it's going to look a lot better, w/o the gas filler provisions in the bed. Atleast I'll know it's been done, because most people won't even notice.

  2. This morning, I removed the lead under the gas lid door & under the rear t/lite.

Opened up the lower t/lite pigtail opening

Then I pulled out the t/gate, to shave that shit off!

Then finally, I welded the gas lid door in!

I have an idea, that will remedy some of my t/lite woes. But don't trip.. we'll get it there!

  3. I was making all kinds of noise today. Between the hammer and dollying the on quarter, & grinding the rest of the bedfloor. A lot of things are starting to make sense, after the dust cleared.

Starting fresh.. I will notch out two tabs to the radius of the pipe that will hold the bearings(just like the arm set up) Then the hsing will pivot smoovely, but be steady at the same time.

Looking good Jay, I've been on vacation, I haven't done diddly squat, but tonight work resumes.
Your tailgate is so pristine too.

Just gotta tell you that gass-filler pipe behind the tail light is killer!

  6. I was fortunate on that one. The whole time I've had, I thought it was brown. But it was surface rust. I bought a lot of parts from the guy I got it from. Went back to buy some more parts, and he made me a helluva deal on it. Glad you're back, I was beginning to think I was the only one on here! hahaha

  7. Thanks, you should Check out WOODPECKER(59 WAGON BUILD) & Nads(Severe bondo abuse) WOODPECKER is the originator of the idea. Nads is knocking it out, too! My Dad has done the same thing to his 2dr 150 55 WGN,(years ago) but not as elaborate. It made me think of a different way to attack the situation. But thats a gonna be a whole different thread, for a later time, with my 55.

Been following this build since the beginning, awesome job, your a motivater. I'll try to post a pic of one I picked up a few months ago, it's been sitting by a cornfield a couple of blocks from me for the past 17 years. A couple of days and I got it on the road, atleast to work and back and to the dump, home depot, etc....!

  13. No, not yet. I haven't spoke to him, either. Should be anyday now. Yesterday my speedo gears showed up,(last thing I needed for my trans) I was hoping it was the 59 parts. Truthfully I wish I got more done everyday, but I bet everyone feels that way.

  15. I was just reading about the Non Driving issue, of the Hirohata Merc.(I wouldn't drive it either, and not because of the the bubblegum welds.) It is an icon to me. My Dad, not so much. It has to do with time. Now it's cool in this time to bash big wheels, pro-"anything" and whatever else. There was a time when CUSTOMS weren't cool anymore.( I still hate wide whites, like most hate big wheels..this is now!) So, it's funny what time does.. watch out, Scott Sullivans Cheese Whiz 55 will soon be considered an icon (aka can't drive it no mo') And there will be people, like my Dad who still don't think so. Both cars went across America, both amazing in their form & function. So if you don't know the history of whats this all about.. use both eyes and ears to learn. That's why you have twice as many, to your one pie hole! Sort through the propaganda & find the knowledge in every situation. I "understand" the rules & platform of this forum. Not the issue here. History, trends & bashing is what I'm getting at. The specific cars I mentioned here, are just examples of the timeline we're in right now. Crazy to think Moonglow and other customs were junked, because It wasn't the fashionable trend to be involved in. I don't follow.. I am my leader. I would never not do something, afraid of some nobodies idea of what should or shouldn't be. Think for yourself and build em to drive.. 98% of everything you worry about, never comes to fruition. Fer' reals!

  16. Thanks again, kind sir!

j ,well said !! i've been following your progress on the el and you are knockin' it out with passion,in the end you can drive the wheels off of it !! keep it up ..

  21. I jus looked through all 30 pages .. Very inspiring and motivating. Great work can wait to see more .

  22. Unbelievable, who much time I have in this t/lite assy. The arrow shows where I had to cut the arm, it wasn't working with the new outer pivot set up. Aye!

I also welded a lip around the nuts O.D, then ground it down and shaped it so it only touches the inner bearing race. Keeps everything else from touching. I didnt take a picture of what I'm talking about. But the nut is welded into the arm, to widen & keep it a little more sturdy.

The pipe with the bearings.. I cant believe how many times I've bolted & unbolted this t/lite assy in & out!

No way of seeing what was coming at me, straight ahead.. I bolted in the t/lite where I wanted it, pushed the arm with the pipe & bearings up to the housing and tacked it. Then I unbolted the hsing, and finished welding it were I could get to it, once tilted out. But, I didn't notice the guide wasn't even close to where it should be. But in my defense, I couldn't see in there.

The arrow shows where it should've been up higher..

I will clean up the welds tomorrow, but here's everything in the raw. Still needs the custom(bend the fuck out out of it till shit fits)touch to make everybody play nice together. A lot of work left, but I'm learning a lot!

Thanks for tuning in everybody, and don't hesitate to chime in anytime.. Jay

don't hesitate to chime in anytime.. Jay[/QUOTE]I'm like'n all the work done with the taillight assembly but something keeps coming to mind. Is todays big ass and mind of there own gas nozzles at the pumps today going to an issue ? I hope not but it keeps bugging me.

  24. I anticiapate many problems, and when I think I'm done with this whole thing.. it will probably spit gas all over me. YAY! If the nozzle goes in, cool! I might have to pull in to the right side pumps & fill it from that angle. I will have to stay outside the box. Or whatever works, probably have to hold it. (BOO!) If it doesn't fill fast enough because of the lack of down ward angle, air bags will be a need & not just a want! So I'm trying to see the positive, not the light.. cos I keep hearing it might be a train coming.

I have a mock up nozzle that I use when locating fill tube, but even with that I have to search for a gas station that doesn't have the flow rate turned up. I use large vents on the tank, none of my tanks are stock. Some have the top of the fill tube close to tank height, that makes it an extra pain to fill

I have the very same problem with my slammed ranchero, the tank had to be raised several inches to avoid dragging, but now the filler tube is damn near level with the top of the gas tank.... pumping in 4 or 5 gallons can easily take 10 minutes, and leave a nice pool of wasted money on the ground at my feet..... definitely time for a change.

  28. Roger: I'm using all the original breather tubing, plus what I have to add to make up for the extra length.

Nads: Yeah, I am mad in the head. An I signed up for this mess! hahaa It's proving to be tougher than WOODPECKER lips!

Gsnickets: I remember my steering stabilizer puncturing the tank, in my first car. 99¢ a gallon, didn't bother me.. At $3.20, it warrants a little more of my time & attention, now a days.

  29. I'm going to Pomona Swap Meet, tomorrow.. Missed several of the past meets.
    List of needs :
    Halogen H5001 & H5006 H/Lite Bulbs(There not those f*ckin H.I.D. lights)
Electric Fan, Trans Cooler, Electric Switches

Took it easy today. Worked on the crappy things, that still need attention.
Today was another episode of, 'Weld, GriiinnD & Repeat!' Still lots to do..

'Tuxies' was great yesterday. I didn't take one picture.. I was talking with Larry Wickert from the Old Farts Racing Team. A good friend of mine Nick Assini, came with me. Goodtimes

  30. I believe I would patch the bed floor as best I could then Rhino coat the panels ONLY. Paint the rest of the bed W. white.

Great build, most would have hauled it off to the crusher.
Hats off to you for your workmanship and persistence.
