My English professor always said to cut out needless words.

    "This car needs restored."
"This car needs to be restored."

The first is shorter, which is better. It's also grammatically correct, so it is the better description.

The shorter and sweeter the add, the better. I want to know what I'm looking at, but if a guy cuts down on useless length, it's a lot easier read.

EDIT: It's ironic, I use poor English while criticizing another's.

A couple of terms not heard much anymore. " My friend balanced and blueprinted the engine." Of course, coming from a guy that has no idea what is entailed in blueprinting an engine. Or the guy with the ported and relieved hemi.

  5. So what does a "seige engine" run on?

BTW the word "engine" comes from the latin root that gives us the word "ingenuity" Quite appropriate for this board I'd say.

(m[IMG][IMG]t[IMG]r) n. 1. Something, such as a machine or an engine, that produces or imparts motion.
    2. A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.
    3. A motor vehicle, especially an automobile: "It was a night of lovers. All along the highway ... motors were parked and dim figures were clasped in revery" (Sinclair Lewis).

    adj.

Not only that but I and several others here, I bet, including Ironpile, have worked on several engines from General Electric.

  7. Lady owner. Means it's been thrashed and has never been serviced.

In my local classifieds paper you call and tell the people what you want to be in your add, this leads to some interesting spellings, Yamaha Raptors are regularly advertised Raptures(cool name I think). Renaults as Renos, Citroens as Sitrons, they do pretty well with the spelling Camaro though.

Do you ride an engine cycle? Have an Engine boat? Like to listen to Engtown music? I read your question but I can't understand what you are asking. Did you read the defination? That would be a Motor. Which is a type of engine. I could have a Maytag engine on my washer. Sure wouldn't be the first one. But if I did I would call it a motor. Look it up in your online dictionary. (I did) Look it up in your paper dictionary. You may not like it. It may cause you to give up one small feeling of superiority you had. But by any measure you are wrong. The words can be used interchangeably. I have a Plymouth engine in my roadster. I have a Plymouth motor in my roadster. They both mean the same thing. Everyone knows what they mean. Both are correct. Now lets get back to those mouth breathers that call drop tanks "belly tankers"

I always understood "original miles" to mean it was the first time or "original" time over the odometer. It has become common for someone to advertise a car with an odometer that repeats @ 100K miles to list it as 152,000 original miles. The second time through the sequence is no longer ORIGINAL miles. I do agree that actual miles is more accurate ....

Those of you complaining about spelling and grammar should express your feelings to your
    school board member.

  12. grammatically correct? Rubbish.

grammatically correct would be "This car needs restoration." or "This car needs restoring."

  13. You must really enjoy reading *TradeMe ads, Lifestylz ;)

I can always tell what generation/nationality is posting ads there by the way things are written.

*For those not living in the Antipodes, TradeMe is NZ's version of an eBay type auction site and has become the main place to buy and sell stuff.

  14. Is complaining even the right word?
I thought people were merely venting or giving opinions. :D

  15. HaHa.. Doing that right now.

I was watching Nascar and sombody asked DW a question. They wanted to know why they call the engines motors. DW looked like he just hit a deer. He looked right at the camera and said " It's a southern thing". I laughed my a$$ off.

  17. "DRUG something home".

This another one that us down under folk can't figure out.
A drug is a drug here..

  18. Gee, I didn't know Mangakino was on the other side of the International Date Line! It's still Saturday in Papakura. ;)

No matter what the day, it's definitely a lazy, wet day in Aotearoa...

Hope all the spelling and grammar errors on TradeMe Motors are entertaining you. I sure get a good laugh out of 'em :D

  19. Beat me to it.

It's like a parallel universe kind of deal.

  20. True mate. It is only Saturday here... :)

  21. When I lived in SoCal, I had friends from the Deep South who used that as the past tense of the verb, 'drag'. Funny ol' language, English.

  22. MODDED!! I hate that word.. especially when it comes from a ricer punk with a fart can

  23. Pretty much any use of the word, 'vintage', beyond wine, is completely lame.

Just say, 'old', or, 'historic', or, 'special to me', or, 'precious'.

  28. You could not be more wrong. It's not grammatically correct to leave out, 'to be', in the phrases cited. Sheesh.
