My prom car was a '65 Rambler Amb***ador. It was a great prom car! Those of you who know about Ramblers will know why it was a great prom car.

I don't understand all the hate for proms here. What do you guys have against an event that brings hormone-driven teenagers together for dinner and dancing with a high probability of fun, illicit alcohol consumption, and at minimum a good make-out session? Spending your prom money on car parts... I think some of you guys might spend a lot of time alone. Or maybe with Palmela Handerson, if you know what I mean.

True, prom was mainly for the girls benefit, much like big weddings and showers but when/where I went to school folks supported their school either through sports or social events. It was just the way it was. You know, the school pride thing?

Sounds like the folks that never went are still griping about not being able go... nothing really ever changes much.

  5. In Forest Grove as well as Hillsboro it was a Soc (as in social ****erfly) get together.

The wife and I went to Portland to a place called Rose's for dinner. The waitress asked where we were from so we told her and she said that it was Prom nite over there weren't we going to miss the prom? The Missus said "not much." Then we pointed the Merc towards Astoria, took a left there and stopped driving at Tillemuk (sp). Built a big fire on the beach and spent the night roasting marshmallows and giggling.

I was or am a Hood. I had no desire to spend any time around the young people of the other social cl*** and sure wasn't going to spend money to do so. Given the choice of spending time with the prettiest girl in the school or spending time with people I didn't get along with which do you suppose I would choose.

Better yet if you could have have spent the night with your favorite person on the face of the earth or at a school sponsored event what would you choose to do?

Not being testy here its just a question.

Doc in answer to your question Prom is short for Promenade young people getting dressed up and strutting their stuff.

It is or at one time it was a highschool dance of sorts only real formal. It originally was just for Seniors (last year in high school) then by the time I was comming up it was the junior senior Prom. Now at least around here it is for any and all highschool students. I think one of the students is supposed to be at least a Junior but they can't keep the other students from attending because of the whole civil rights issue.

It is now normally held at a hotel as opposed to being held at the school and more often then not the students have rooms reserved at the hotel. I guess if you have a son its pretty cool and if you have a daughter you dred it.

We didn't care about school spirit or any of that stuff but we did attend the dances, homecomings, and proms! We were gearheads but we were still teenage boys and knew where the girls would be, so we went. Even if you had a steady girl you had to go to these events. If she put out, she'd stop if you didn't. If she didn't put out these events helped to "open" the opportunity! Besides without the school events, where did everyone find their booze or smoke? LOL

This is what I got to ****** my prom date in; a 1978 Mustang King Cobra. It used to belong to my brother-in-law. Needless to say, we made quite an entrance a**** all the black and white limos [IMG]

  9. Same here on not going to the prom. I changed high schools between my sophmore and junior years, and it was pretty clickish where I went. I didn't fit in with the stone freaks, the preppies or the so called greasers. I raced cycles, built cars, these thigs were foreign to most of my schoolmates. There big thing was hanging out in town, mine was street racing on Telegraph.

Most of my friends were out of school. A couple went to other schools. In fact, I only dated two girls in my high school, and the last one we started dating a couple of weeks before school ended, and that was in my second senior year. In fact the longest time I went with a girl in high school she lived in Detroit, a few miles away.

No testiness interpreted. I think we're just coming from two different generational perspectives. I went to a fairly affluent (though I myself am from blue collar roots, and my parents worked 2 jobs to send me there) all-boys college prep high school. Proms were just something you did. It was also a little bit of bragging especially if you had a pretty girlfriend, you would flaunt her in front of your cl***mates at prom since they didn't see her on a day-to-day basis. The girls liked to go, and if they were happy, then we were happy. I also got along with most all of my cl***mates, so it was really a nice night out with friends and friendly acquaintances. I think most of my cl***mates felt the same way. Typically, it was the losers and weirdos who didn't come because they either a) couldn't get a date, or b) weren't social enough to have friends to go with, which was rare in school since even so-called nerdy guys were accepted by the populous if they were nice and had good grades.

My prom date was actually a fill in, since my girlfriend at the time broke up with me 2 weeks before the prom and I was stuck. I had no idea that a friend of mine was interested, and she swooped in as my date. She was really pretty, lots of fun, and I definitely had one of the best nights of my life. We wound up dating for almost a year after that and we still keep in touch.

So to answer your question, I guess I'd rather have spent that night with my favorite person on the earth at the school sponsored event. We had a helluva time.

I had a (still have) a lime green 70 jeepster in HS. It was nice when I was 16, but by the time I was a senior and going to prom, it wasn't much to look at. The doors and top were off of it as soon as it hit 60 during the day! I borrowed my mom jeep Cherokee. She has a 66 mustang vert, but to this day still wont let me drive it. I wanted to drive my jeep, but I was afraid my date, who was rather short could not get into it with a dress on. The car I borrowed was lame, but I do have a good story. We got to the school and I got out and locked the car and somehow lost the keys. I had to call my mom to bring her set and we still couldn't find the set of keys I had brought inside the car. While I was taking her home, we went around a corner and I heard something sliding across the roof... the keys! Flipped around and there they were, lying in the middle of the road! With my all my nerves going nuts I had set them on the roof for some odd reason and completely forgot about it! It was a good laugh, but I was relived to find MY set of keys. The keys to my jeep were also on that ring and I was afraid a buddy would find them and mess with my jeep. It wasn't much, but it was my baby!

  12. I went to a Lutheran High school and we were not allowed to dance, so proms were out. We had a thing called the Junior Senior Farewell held at the school. So we held our own " Prom " so to speak. Local hangout with plenty of beer and girls. The girl I hooked up with loved my 57 Chevy, 348 tri-power & Muncie 4 speed. We dated, I graduated, went to Viet nam, came home, married her, and now it's 44 years later and we go to Dairy Queen on Monday nights in our 29 Roadster, do I like proms, never been to one, but I believe my whole life was moulded around that one we never went to in 1966. That's my prom car story.

I drove my '80 Olds Cutl*** Supreme to prom (white, burgandy guts, 260 V8, 65k mile car clean as hell).. I was gettin' it ready for prom the day before, polishin' up the centerlines, and gettin' ready to lay on some tire shine.. The ol' man comes rollin' a set of 15" Tru Spokes on pinner whites in the garage.. tells me to jack it up and put 'em on.. He said my girl's shoes couldn't out shine my woman's shoes.. Man did we turn heads.. hopped out of the ol' girl in my front row parkin' spot my lady in burgandy dress with white lace, me in a white and burgandy tux, w/ a pair of $200 burgandy (w/ white swoop) nikes... couldn't knock me down with a freight train that night.. after prom I ditched the fancy tux for a t-shirt and jeans, she did the same.. went bowlin' with some friends then out to a bon fire.. got pretty twisted and found out how much room there is in the front seat of a two door cutl***... good times.. still have the car, moved on to a different girl..

I have the dubious distinction of getting to attend not one, not two, but four proms!
My girl back in the day, was two grades below me. So got to do my junior and senior prom, and her junior and senior prom.
in 73 and 74 I went in my 64 T-Bird. In 75 and 76, took my 66 Coronet 500 convertible, 383 4-speed car with a Mr. Gasket Verti-gate shifter. Still have that Dodge too!
I wasn't even thinking about going to my junior prom, but the girl brought it up and how much fun it would be. She also got to hang with the older kids then as well. I was a gear head, but there were a couple other gear heads also who had girl friends, so we went and hung together. For her proms, ended up going and hanging with her friends. Sometimes you had to do those kind of things.............sort of like attending the girls family get togethers, and weddings of her relatives etc..............
One thing, when we went to my senior prom, it was held at a restaurant, and I was 18, so just walked into the bar and got a drink. One of the chapperones was in there getting a drink as well. Told me to finish my drink, and get back to the hall. It was considered a school function so the bar was off limits.

By the time my girlfriend's (now wife of 38 years) Prom came along I was 19 and had purchased my first car, a '68 Firebird I bought in '71.

Still have the gal, wish I still had the car. Too bad Michigan's winters took such a huge toll on it. It was a Fred Flintstone car by the time we junked it.:(

But my girlfriend at the time looked lovely! :) We had dinner and dancing at 'The Nights of Columbus" Hall... I think it's on Grand River.. Then we drove to a ritsy hotel.. Not sure where though, and spent the whole weekend in bed.. Room service with lots of bubblie and a whole lot of lovin' :) I still see her every now and then and talk about the crazy **** we used to do when we were teens. :) Them were some fun times..

My dad let me drive his OT Camaro to my prom. 68 RS Convertible, hugger orange with a black bumble bee stripe. It was very chilly and windy so the top had to stay up. My date gave me the option of prom pictures or a hotel room for the night, so I promptly spent the 35 bucks for a dive hotel! That was in 91 and we are still together today. We have been happily married 16+ years now.

  22. drove mom's 68 catalina...2 door convert...400, 3 on the tree..that thing was ordered as a 68 GTO..but mom teased my step dad (frisch's exc) that she was going to go to larwrenceburg indy and run it on the dirt circle track..friday nite run what ya brung...so the ol man went and had it changed to the catalina..same paint, interior drop top...mom cried when they picked it up....it was special ordered so, no changin it...would roast tires till the cows came home...

me and Marriane B went to prom in it as juniors...car looked great, cleaned, shined and top dropped....we had some Ballyhigh wine, a sack of the good stuff (real gold back in the day!!!!!!)......Marriane looked killer!!!!! we was know for all the places we'ld do it around school during cl***es...she was a freak about getting knocked up...had a thing about not letting it "shoot" everywhere...damn she was like miss pac man at the right time every time!!!...we spent the whole jr year finding places to do it in school, during school.....damn i loved theose dresses she wore on "special" days.:p:p:p...the prom???don't remember much, other then how her mom fixed her up ...corrsett and all...her ma thought i was the *** freak.....Marriane laughed when she told me how much cothing she had on under the dress...took me 30 minutes to dig thru it toget to the goodies that nite....

went to a summer college prep cl***es that summer, per my step dad...met a hot senior chick there...broke Marriane's heart...Old Carol was a hotter looking Hippy chick then Marriane..thought i was scorin big time...till i found out it was like humpin a barrel.....Marriane wouldn't take me back either..

35 years latter, wish i never went to summer school that year.....
