  1. +1 You are correct.

  2. Orientated, as in: "My car is speed orientated."

I understand it when an oldtimer uses the term. What annoys me is when some 17 year old schmuck uses it when talking about the SBC in his 79 Nova 4dr.

  4. There´s the really odd spoken one - people who say "pacific" when they mean "specific". Huh?

Bear Grylls (Man vs Wild) uses - or misuses - that constantly. Almost as bad as "irregardless".

  6. That´s British English old boy.:)

Nowhere near as bad as "irregardless"! Never heard that one before, but it´s hilarious.

I hate the terds who call nitrous, NOS. I got NOS man, Dude is that NOS, what the f man, my budy s car is faster then yurs its got the NOS. No I never ran NOS, I just run a simple fuel expeditor. Nothing serious like NOS, no, just a little something to excite the mixture just a tad and cool the heads a bit. Not that anyone here would ever excite the mix, heavens no.

Apparently, it's "proper" English, British or otherwise - I was surprised to find it in the dictionary. Guess I'm not as edumacated as I thunk I am.

I suppose I'd better let Bear off the hook now.....

    I wasn't speaking to that.

  12. A word that gets up my nose these days is "agreeance". Whatever happened to plain old "agreement" or "agree".

  13. Have to disagree on this. From an Oz perspective anyway.

One of the most revered and venerated muscle cars in this country is the Ford Falcon GT. In particular the versions built around 1970-71. The GT Falcons were all 4 door sedans up until the XA coupes were released in 1973.

The high point was the XY Falcon GT sporting 351 Cleveland and in the day claimed to be the fastest 4 door sedan in the world. (147mph) Has now achieved legend status in this country. In the years before the GFC they changed hands for as high as around $700,000 (Aus$) in this country. No one in this country would doubt for a minute that these cars are muscle cars.

This is funny considering the title of the thread.:D

Oh, and mine is "Caddilac Converter". Heard a guy say that today.

  15. The first is not grammatically correct and is therefore not a better description. To be considered a proper sentence, example one requires the word "restoration" in place of "restored".

Regarding what misused descriptions irritate me, I agree with most of what's already been listed. I think though, for me, the overall lack of concern about punctuation and spelling by the younger generation is the biggest irritation; I guess it's the texting craze that legitimizes poor grammar. I honestly believe in the not too distant future, some of this bastardized language will become adopted as correct; sometimes it's easier to change the rules to fit the majority than to make the majority follow the rules.

Being that I am a wheel/tire aficionado, one that really bothers me is "lots of thread left" when describing tread depth; maybe a local thing as others have mentioned.

And why is it that NEARLY EVERY Chevy
you see with a Muncie 4-speed, advertised
for sale, always has an "M22"??!! The actual
Muncie "M22" (aka the "Rock Crusher"- so
named because they had a stronger, coarser
cut pitch on the gears and were therefor,
also, noisy as hell) was a very limited production,
    "competition-type" trans, while the other
99.9% or so of actual Muncie 4-speed-equipped
cars got the garden variety 'M20' and 'M21'
    boxes.

    ----------------
PS. And don't get me going on Chevys with
Saginaw-speeds that the sellers think that
because their car has a 4-speed, that it
therefore MUST be a Muncie, (usually an
    "M22" as well LOL), or a Borg-Warner
    'T10' or 'Super T10'!!!

how about "VIN number" or as i call it, the vehicle identification number number.

  23. I get a knot in my shorts when knobs say a car has a "Nitro kit" on it. Really? he's injecting Nitromethane in it? Nitrous Oxide, Nitromethane, what's the difference?

I can't stand how every small block Chevy is a Corvette engine, despite the fact that it was pulled from a wheezy '83 Caprice.

Not sure if this has been covered "Pre. '48" when describing cars made before the Post WWII changeover. It is "Pre. '49" That would be cars '48 and older.

Funny you say that but the ASRF, Australian Street Rod Federation is big, or was big in the 80s/90s on the Pre48 tag. There was (Is?) even a factin among Australian Hot Rodding that is almost militant Pre 48!
I am a subscriber to them as they are the closest we have to something like the H.A.M.B, most people are building 90s style street rods still. UGH!

    Doc.

PS I learnd unglush myself gooder an' any skuul ken learnd me.

    "has original 225 slant V6"

    "has straight V6"

"posi rear end" when describing a Mopar, it's sure-grip, people

"ran when parked" aka engine is now frozen and will never come unstuck

"only needs such and such part, a $20 fix at your local Autozone" then why didn't you get the damn thing and put it on

"rare" or "classic" when referring to a K-car
