Yo, LoCat, what is this critter? Looks vaguely like a Muntz, but not.
Maybe a one-off done by an individual or smaller shop? Anybody?

Now THIS is special, and a shot I haven't seen before.
Unless my gray matter blew a fuse again, it's the ORIGINAL
prototype done by Howard Dutch Darrin for Joe W. Frazer.
This looks better IMHO than the production version. Darrin
was incensed by how the in-house design department
homogenized his design (he was a picky guy), and he would
barely talk civilly with them ever after. BUT, his new '51
design got produced pretty much as he intended and was
praised worldwide. With little change it was produced for
a dozen years (including IKA, Industrial Kaiser of Argentina).
Really, for longevity, it rivaled Loewy's '53 Stude
    Champion/President template.

Here's the prototype shot I posted last year, and I'd thought
it was the only existing pic of the car Howard Darrin designed.

Sincere thanks to the Frazer Fraternity, which shows this photo on the internet at their
site, public.fotki.com/kfnut/the_frazer_fraternity/darrinby, site of the official chat
room of the Frazer Fraternity organization. For a great read, first just search Frazer
    Convertible on Google.

Ahhhh! THOSE were the days when a guy and his gal
could go out cruising for a little peace of . . . er, uh, mind!
But here, they decline the challenge to a round of Donkey
    Basketball.

  6. You're correct it's a one-off custom built.

Here's a few more shots of the Darrin car. It was found on the 'Life' magazine archive using the search term 'custom cars'

'39 Nash. I believe the writing says '42 Spokane. I have no idea who Margo is... :)

er, hu . . . "mildy customized" '50 Nash Rambler.
Looks a tad like something out of "Mad Max Beyond
Thunderdome," doesn't it? If they'd just painted it Plum
Crazy Purple, they could have called it the People Eater!
Sheb Wooley would have been proud! LOL

62OldsFan, you're almost right. It's a '39 LaFayette, not a regular Nash. '59Plym had thought the inscription said '42 Graham (hard to read). We hashed it out by PMs. Please see my Post #8327, as follows:

Plym46, yup, I know what a Graham was. I just didn't take this car for a Graham. My first impression was a Nash or maybe one of the very last Lafayettes.

    Unfortunately, Margo's true identity
    is still a mystery! LOL

During the 50's & 60's you'd always see a race car at a gas station. Here is Del Quinn in front of Quinn's Signal Service Station, San Pablo, California. Del allowed me to letter some signs at his gas station and as a 15 year old here is where I got my career started hand painting signs. (Notice window lettering and small signs under Signal Lubrication) The next year I lettered my first race car (#16).
