I have the folding front factory bucket seats to a 38 willys 2 door sedan. They were called a CLIPPER.
I have a pair of 38-39 willys 2 door front seats. they are bucket seats. These came out of an abandoned willys that was upside down in a creek bed somewhere between Sacramento and Auburn. They are for sale or trade. Bryan.........
And Merv Barnett's "ugly front" 37 was recently for sale http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C296590, I love it.
Hello all, after browsing some of the willys threads on here. I came across the two door coupe thread " real or welded doors" I have a 37 willys that is a two door but on the title it says 37 sedan. Do you guys think it's a typo or did they make two door sedans ? Thanks
Is there a place I can look up the vin to get a little more info on the car ? It has two badges one under the hood on top of the fire wall, and one on the drivers side fender that's only exposed with the hood up. Thanks in advance Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Blackbird96 To my knowledge there is no source that has that kind of information relative to vin numbers. One of the best ways to know if it is a factory 2-door or just welded shut, is the the door window moulding. On a factory 2-door it will be removable like coupe doors, and front and rear window mouldings. In fact the whole window mechanism gets put in from the inside of the door, while the 4-door rear(door) windows get put in through a slot when the door is open. They(2-doors) were only made that way in the '38-'39 model year. g-willys
Blackbird96,can you post some pics of the car and the plates, that would help and be interesting to see also. JW
Here is a a few pics. The car is all steel minus the doors and trunk lid just trying to get more info on it. Thanks
Cars a 37 I can tell by drip molding.but iam sure it was a welded up 4 door.they made 2 doors in 38 and a few 39"s
I was hoping I had a one of the rare ones guess not so much. Any ideal of how many 37's where made that year and just a wild guess of how many are still running the streets these days ?
I realize this is an old post, but the guy the guy that owned this was a great friend and this car was a great story. I miss him. I anyone cares to hear the story, I will try to tell it as close as I can.
He and a couple of friends raced the car in the 60's. I'm pretty sure the first engine they ran was the 430 Lincoln (later got the 462 crank swap). Then ran a 350 chevy when they first came out (1968?). He had sold out his share of the car at some point and got busy with life. In the 90's, he found the body in a wrecking yard and bought it back. He rebuilt the car into a streetable version with a 460 Ford, but the racing bug got ahold of him again. When I met him (we worked at the same dealership - him as a sales manager, me as a mechanic) he was running a 531 Ford in it with around 800hp and still running a 4spd standard. Around this time another friend of his found the old Lincoln motor and he ended up getting that and had worked on that for a street car. The old Lincoln engine had a log manifold with 6 strombergs. He eventually planned to sell the Willys and swapped the engine out to a milder 460 as he didn't want some novice to be unleashed with 800hp and kill themselves. The car went to a nephew of his and the nephew began to race it. After about a year, my friend decided to take the reigns of it again, and built the 460 up somewhat and raced it regularly. For me it was fascinating that he got both his car and his engine back that he had been racing in the 60's, and that the Willys went back on the track again.
^^^^ Great story right there !!! There were 63,467 '37 Willys built that year and i have had one for 37 years. JW
If anyone is looking for a 39 two door sedan body to build pm me and I will give you the info from a for sale ad that I saw. I think it is in Minnesota.
Yes but that includes all models and before they were used as gassers they were a throw away economy car kind of like the Volkswagen Beetle of their day, a light economy car. I bet that not many survived. I know of a lot of them bought out of junk yards for $20 to $100 back in the day.
I know of a lot of them bought out of junk yards for $20 to $100 back in the day. This is very true...prices didn't start to rise until the early 80's and not big prices until the '90's. Just try and find a decent part for 20-100 $$ now-a-days. Let's see if we can get any opinions on this, over my many years of talking with Willys guys I have known, my best guess would be somewhere around 10-15% were pickups, 25-30% Coupes...that is approximately in the 45% realm, and that would leave about 55% sedans. Using that 63,464 figure as a total, may give you a better idea of numbers. By the way that was one of their largest production years, along with 1938 (my '39 shark nose was in a production total of roughly 13,000 in that year (not counting the Model 48, which was listed as a '39, but the same as a 37-38), and with full Jeep production already underway in 1942, the best I could find was well under 10,000 cars/trucks/coupes. 40 & 41 production was under the 37-38 figures but greater than 1939, or 1942. I have seen different production numbers listed for many of these years, but generally in the same range. P.S. Bought my 1st coupe in 1960 for $250, and drove it home. g-willys
My theory on the hood emblems...but only a theory. I have long thought that the "overland" only emblems were on early modes of the '39 style, and that the overland name recogntion which was prevelant in the '20's as a prestegious Willys model, was not associated with Willys very much 10 years later...so they added Willys to the overland hood moniker. I have several of both and also had a one off neon sign made to match the lettering of the Willys-Overland model. Again, just my theory!!! g-willys
The 1939 Willys sales brochure has an Overland emblem only on one side of the hood . I would think that the sales brochure was printed in 1938 , for the up coming year . So probably , the early cars , only had one emblem . Is your car an early 39 serial number ? And does it have standard 39 gauges , or the leftover 38 round gauges in it ?
I have heard of two Overlands for 39, the first is the Model 39 and the second as the Model 61. The name Overland was revised for one year only and this causes a lot of confusion. The 39 Willys has a 100" wb,cable brakes,48 hp motor and used 38 (Model 38) panels and was known as the Model 48. The 39 overland had a 102 '' wb, juice brakes and a 61 hp motor and the shark nose with the unique headlights. I owned a 39 Overland model 39 for 35 years and it had the round gauges ( same as 37-38) or could this be an export thing and had a single glove box and had just the name Overland on the hood and had the 61 hp motor. So what is the Model 61?, is this a Deluxe version as the pictures I have seen of them have extra tail lights on the end of the belt line and have square gauges ! JW
Might be a while before I can get over to my dads to check but it does have round gauges. Also noticed a difference in drip rail length on the sedans. '38 '39 '40
