motor swap is done. no pics cuz it looks exactley the same. could prolly stand to be tuned a bit more but i'm sick of working on it. runs good, no leaks, job done. sure do love that lopey idle!
don't worry it took plenty of "beatings" in the s-10. motor's running nice got her to idle right around 800 (sounds wicked), seems at least as responsive as the last stock cammed/tunnel rammed 305, pulls hard from 3 right on up to 6 grand, & i can lug it around in 4th at like 1500. so i'm gonna go ahead & say that the only "driveabilty" issue with a too much cam having, tunnel rammed small block on the street is if there's a total wuss-bag behind the wheel. you def have to know what to expect from this combo, how to tune it, & how to drive it. but don't let people tell you you can't run this setup. street tunnel ram rant over
i just hope it comes right up the next time some fng searches "can i use this tunnel ram on the street?" and they read mine before the 30 pages of "noooo way man, theory dictates this won't work/ you'll be in tuning hell" b.s.
i dunno why people say you cant use the tunnel ram on the street ive used mine in my old nova and it drove great ..it was de tunned for the street but was still a blast to drive and im using mine in my 56 and i will drive the shit outta it...
keep in mind this is all on a pep boys re-man motor. it's got the thick (will seal all imperfect deck/head) .040 head gaskets, with whatever pistons, so compression on this pig is at best optimistic guess around 9:1. i don't have power brakes to worry about, but i'd gladly sacrifice them for a gnarly cam. got my priorities straight. you know? anyways... this has given me much ambition to put together the 283 i have sitting on the floor, as a spare of course. it's got factory flat tops. i need to measure the deck height on it to see where steel shim head gaskets & 58 cc chamber Lg4 305 heads (1.84/1.50 valve) will get me as far as compression ratio goes. i'm banking on around 10:1. which with the correct cam should be a real screamer for just the price of rings bearings, new rod bolts, oil pump & gasket set. and if it sucks or blows up i'm sure i can come up with another $300 small block to replace it.
looks fuckin sick man... you guys should come over on the ferry on sat to go to the rumble in brooklyn its always a blast getting there is half the fun..
this one reminds me of 2 lane blacktop or any parking lot in town back in the day...looking for a race
added an electric fan today. the car's never got close to overheating, but i had it lying around & i got a bunch of city traffic driving to do tomorrow so it's cheap insurance. $10.oo worth of a switch & mounting kit type cheap.
this is on my list for next year. gonna try & get a bunch of guys from the club to make the trip. we all just made the milltown trip & had a few casualties, my 305 & 2 other guys from the club blew their motors too. so next year we're gonna really gear up to make both shows & have a good showing at each.
cool yea i just took my car for a 75 miles trip and boy was it screaming way to much gear in the rear a 4 speed i either need a t-5 or i need a really tall tire .so i can drop the rpm's while in 4th gear tops i was doing 60 at full speed so it took me like 2 hours to get to the rumble when i shoulda been there in 40 mins ..but next year imma try to make the miltown and the rumble also ..well see what happends
yeah, i drove my shitbox for like 4 hours yesterday goin back & forth to the road devils show. new motor didn't miss a beat. sat in stop & go boston traffic for like 30 mins straight. bogus. glad i installed that electric fan, kept the temp right at 160. saw a few kool rides at the show, got there kinda late so people were starting to clear out. it was cool talking to 100%matt his buddies. those dudes in 2 lane blacktop were some hardcore s.o.b.s. blasting down the highway for hours at a time with a screaming small block & no radio begins to wear on a guy...oh well, i did this to myself. like i said, we plan on making it out to the rumblers show next year for sure. looks like a blast.
if you listen the car is pretty quiet till they uncap the headers otherwise a fire breathing 454 would drive you insane
thanks guys, it's getting there. 1 detail at a time. haha, i'll stick with the dirty looks i get from that crowd
Nah I was already there when my 454 fired! '55 is looking good and I'll agree on the tunnel rams just see the avatar it's street driven and runs 11's driving it to the track so I'll tell whoever says a tunnel ram ain't streetable to cram it up there ass! Oh yeah and it gets me to and from work and the bar pretty regularly to boot!
