Leave the wheels alone except some hubcaps...as for paint, do the flat black thing. Conservative on the pinstriping. Easy to do and you'll like!

I'm amazed at how many fans of shit box rusty faded clapped out poorman lookin cars there are here lately. I guess if that turns your crank well ok then. For me, painted and professional looking is the way. Why disrespect yourself or the car? I never understood that. And to "opel" about the Ford motor comment, why? If there's any engine that belongs under the hood of a fat fendered Ford other than a SBC it would be an early Caddy. Early Olds would be the 2nd choice. But a Ford? Really? I didn't know the 260/289/302 family of Fords were available in the 50s and early 60s.

Find a mirror and look into it. Now ask the guy looking back at you if he wants to see paint on your car or not. Thats the only opinion that counts.

  12. if i panted it it would be a magnet for dings and scratches, if you don,t pant it it won't get scratched!

Drive it! Looks great as is.

  14. Paint it when you have the money. Like someone else already said, no since in leaving it half done. If you don't have the money to paint right now drive it as is till yo do.

  15. I like 41-18 ford sedans painted with a stock color that was avaiable when the car was new...The car is a "mild-mobile" and should be painted as such. I also like the maroons, grays, tans and black isn't a bad idea either if the car is straight enuf but it's hot as hell in the summer. A little flattener will give the paint that original faded look...a LITTLE flattener.

I'm going to buck the trends developing in this thread and be the first to advise you to chromium plate the entire body and every other visible piece of metal on the car.

I can't be the only one who thinks the car is done as it sits and doing nothing would be just the right amount of something???

I would paint the wheels a different color, maybe a nice cream color, get it striped, and drive!! You just got the car, why send the next couple of months ripping it apart and painting it, you are not even sure if you love the car yet....simple upgrades, drive it for a bit and the car will tell you what way it wants to go!!

I say a very dark blue something stockish looking with wide white bias ply's with shiny ass black wheels and some caps, a nice cream or tan mohair or vinyl interior, dress up that small block with some early sbc goodies and chromed script valve covers and chromed rams horns put it through some 2" glass packs out the back and Drive!!!!!!!!

  23. Ya know highlander you are absolutely right. But I guess if I had to break the rules a medium rise 427 wouldn't be a bad idea. Of course a tunnel port would be even more cool but then again if ya gonna dream, dream big I always said.

I see no reason in the world to change the engine and evidently neither does the mutt. Paint was the topic of discission if I understand correctly. I am a big fan of paint myself, but I'm stuck in the '60s. We took all those unfinished '50s cars when I was a kid and finished 'em. Or a finished one and waxed it.

So what ys got in the Opel anyway.

Sorry just wanted to jump in on the bashing. :p

  24. Well...hmmm.....a painted car without doing engine box and suspension or interior is just a painted car. Sort of half pregnant:eek:. With the grey primer one can get away with less of an interior, etc. I have always felt the best cheapest upgrade is wheels and tires, fresh shoes and socks give good contrast to the not so perfect body. Save your money, enjoy the car. As far as the engine, well I am strictly Chevy for my rides but I do agree on Ford on Ford or a Caddy mill. Again save the money, SBC's in proper dress always fit the cause, I have always favored the early finned Corc. VC's. Just my opinions. Respectfully, CGM:)

  25. Actually we don't know that the rest of the car isn't in good shape. My experience has always been that when you buy one it was built wrong but I'm sure that some of you fellas have purchased a good car or two in your lifetime. If for no other reason I have sold more than one car in my lifetime.

  26. Agreed....or, make it look like everyone elses ride, and don't skip the Mexican blankets and spiderwebs.....Seems to be as far along as most guys get today. Back in the day, (I was there), primer was a stop along the way..( a cool stop, but a stop none the less)..now....I just don't get it. Centurion9

Hard to tell, but if it is actual paint and not primer, I would just buff it!

And then I'd paint the steelies black and put some 7.00 and 5.60 Firestones on it.

This, other than a flatty would be super cool in there. But yeah, a Caddy or Olds would be also.

    Paint it.
