Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie,
shortly before their assassination, Sunday, June 28, 1914, in
Sarajevo, Serbia. Each was mortally wounded by a single bullet,
though five shots were fired. Europe was already a political
tinderbox, this event promulgated World War I, costing millions
of lives -- some say, squandering or blighting virtually an
entire generation of young life around Europe at large.
Hence the expression "the Lost Generation." Sincere THANKS
    to the UK site spactacus.schoolnet!

The 1911 Graft & Stift phaeton in which Ferdinand and Sophie
were mortally wounded. THANKS is due the WikiMedia
Commons Project! This photo was taken in a Vienne, Austria,
museum in 2003; please let me know if that is too new to
    appear on this thread.

The couple depart Sarajevo City Hall,
having survived a bomb attempt already.
Shortly, they would be dead. Photo
    THANKS to WorldWar1.com!

was, I believe, because of the work he was doing in the US military, the first person, outside of Russia, to learn of Stalin's death.
