Hi fellows, Just picked up a nice 14.5" blue Superior wheel. It has the 3 hole mounting hub. It did not come with a mounting kit or horn cap. Does anyone sell a kit that can be used to mount this wheel in my 65 Biscayne?

Go to your local O'reily's or AutoZone and get a Grant hub adapter. They're around $20. And you should post a pic of the steering wheel.

Is it possible to retore an old metal flake wheel. I have a decent Superior 500 ''look alike' 15.5" wheel that was blue but has some sun damage and the chrome spokes are lightly pitted. Do you think it can be rechromed without destroying the vinly/metalflake? How about refinishing the metal flake using a paint system designed for flexible/plastic parts? Anyone try this yet?

  5. I think it'd just be easier to buy a new black or white wheel for the new chrome, and then flake the color you want over the black or white. I have one in the garage I bought that someone did and it looks great

Yes, the wheels can be re-chromed without hurting the grip and there are plenty of products out there that will help restore the vinyl. If your wheel is just a run of the mill Superior 500 and not something rare like an Ansen or Cragar you would be better off just finding a nicer one.

Sorry, no pic, but back in the '60's we put metal flake in a salt shaker, sprinkled it on a black steering wheel that had just been painted, then put on a couple coats of clear.

Great thread. Always LOVED the early metal flake steering wheels. I have a newer 15" Moon wheel in mine. Here are a few different angles...

Only a complete idiot would pay that much for that wheel. Look around, you can find those for about $100-$150 in nearly perfect condition.

Blue is one of the tougher colors to find.

I'll have to dig it out, but I have a old dragster "butterfly" wheel with gold fleck grips that my dad got in the 80s from an old guy who had it hanging in his garage.

    Jeff,

Someone did a thread a while back that detailed how to clean up the vinyl. Try a search.

    ***EDITED TO ADD***

    Found it. Check this out...

  25. Get a hold of John Denich for product to clean/polish the vinyl

  26. fuckkk yeah !
i need one of those for my shoebox!

  27. I have a collection of Metal-flake wheels, only 20 or so that I am considering letting go but it sounds like some people would consider me an idiot for what I would have to ask for some of the rare colors. Only because of what I had to pay for them to begin with! I do not quibble over prices of parts that you want or need as I found that the next guy will take it and you will still be looking. When you step up to the plate you have to swing the bat, some things in life are not for the squeemish. I am not an e-bay seller so I would rather see fellow Hambers with these wheels. I will put them on the Hamb classifieds. First up, Purple.

  29. That's exactly right.

  30. At Christmas I am going to hang all my wheels on a Christmas tree and take a picture, that should satisfy the thread:eek::D.
