This is still my favorite thread of all times, but it seems that it's gone a bit off topic.

Thanks for the tip on the blow-ups, LowCat. I had looked up Fort Schuyler (referred to on the sign), and it was an old fort dating back to the American Revolution and War of 1812 -- in the Bronx, NYC. That's why I ventured the Bonx as the location of this scrap drive. It's not ironclad fact -- more an educated guess -- but it's the best I could deduce from the visual clues and researching them on the web.

    Anybody else got a thought?

You are on to something with the Fort Schuyler sign, but I will add this to that. Fort Schuyler Beer was brewed as an economy brand (last I bought was 89 cents a 6 pack) produced by the Utica Club Brewery (Think Shultz and Dooley) in Utica, NY. It was only distributed within maybe 50 miles of Utica, NY. So I would think that picture was in one of the small Industrial towns that once lined the Mohawk river valley. Towns like Fonda, Gloverstown, Johnstown, Canahoharie, Rome, Little Falls, Herkimer. There is also a town of Schuyler east of Utica. My further guess is that one of those streets is NY RT 5, which was the main east west route along the Mohawk river. This would be pretty close to RustyNewYorker's neck of the woods.

That multi sided building on the upper left corner of the intersection might still be there.

check out the black on yellow stop sign on the lower left corner of the intersection. Still had the white catseye reflectors

Go to http://www.google.com and copy paste the following line into the search field:

    Utica Civilian Defense source:life

It'll pull up the set of pictures this pic is a part of. They were taken in May, 1951 in Utica, NY. Look for 554 Albany Road, Utica, NY 13501 in the mapping site of your choice (Bing, Google Maps, etc) and do a street view.

You're welcome, folks. I'll be here all week. No, I don't have too much time on my hands - this took less than 5 minutes. ;)
