What happened to the UFO in the original photo?

We're all here thinking, what I would give for that 35 5 window. What a shame. But during war times, sacrifices must be made.

Sure they are, they now sell t-shirts with skulls and iron crosses on them, oh, and those wallet chain gizmos, too....

 

LowCat, this is what a makes a great thread great! You post
ONE interesting photo that BEGS people to study every detail.
BIG conversation ensues. Bits of the puzzle surface and are
pieced together, until the answer finally emerges! In the
PROCESS, still more related photos are added to the search.

In the original low-res, I was puzzled by what appeared
POSSIBLY to be a post-war car (turned out to be about a
'50/'51 -- see different angle, below), AND I wrongly assumed
it was a WWII scrap drive (turned out to be more like Korean
War time-frame). Then, Plym46 and Abomination come
along and CORRECTLY interpret the Fort Schuyler Beer sign
to arrive at the CORRECT location, Utica in the Mohawk Valley!
God, I love the HAMB!

Having won the '52 Grand National NASCAR championship,
one might think Tim Flock crazy for resorting to a publicity
stunt for '53. But he actually let a Rhesus monkey nicknamed
Jocko Flocko (#91) be his co-pilot for eight races. In the run-up
publicity to NASCAR's 50th birthday, a jovial Tim recounted how
ol' Jocko got the boot at Raleigh! With Tim running #2, Jocko
wormed out of his custom-made harness and lifted one of the
trap doors the driver in those days used to eyeball tire wire
during pit stops. The monkey went ape, jumping and clawing
all 'round Tim and the inside of the Hudson Hornet! Tim had
to pit to hand off Jocko and finished the race third, costing him
$600 out of his winnings share. Sounds like THAT was the end
of what maybe wasn't such a great idea, anyhow! Sincere

Always affable, Tim Flock looks a tad uncomfy here, smothered in
smackers from his missus AND his brother Fonty at the third annual
Southern 500, Darlington, Sept. 1, 1952. Maybe jokester Fonty got
carried away since he wore COOL "bamooda" shorts and a tee-shirt
during his entire race-winning run! It was rumored he said before
the race, "Fire suit? We don't need no stinking fire suit!" LOL

Thanks for this post, SWI. It's great to see an old pic of a well-maintained
brick highway. From around the turn of the century, and somewhat into
the '30s, this was the primary method of paving -- finally being supplanted
by asphalt-based tar-mac paving methodology, faster to do and better
traction for ever-faster traffic. I posted about this back in February on #1674,
if anybody wants to look into the history a bit. I'm still flabbergasted that it
took half-a million of these salt-fired "pavers" for each mile of 25-foot-wide
highway. Even the Indy Motor Speedway was originally paved with 'em
(hence, "The Brickyard").

 

The UFO in the original life picture of the Utica CD pic is an interesting bit. Hard to ell from the pic what direction it is moving. But Utica is but a few miles from Rome, NY home of what was the Griffis Air Force Base. Griffis was the a ferry baase for SAC during the 50's. So B 47's and b 36's were in and out of Griffis on many of thier flights.

The 1st, 27th, and 71st fighter iterceptor squadrons were also temporarily based there in the early 50's. So the UFO may be a large strategic bomber or a fast interceptor, or a UFO. I remember remember F 102 Delta Darts, and F 86/9 Sabres, and F 87 jets i the air around the area during those years.

I agree. just put MrFire on your ignore list, it helps a lot. Although I appreciate the effort, I dont need to see NEW photos of "vintage" stuff, not exactly what this thread is about. I also dont understand why every photo needs its own post, you can place multiple photos in the same post, people will see be able to see them, but yeah, ignore works too, lol.
