They're doing it the way we have always done it...and still do, except we use a tree limb....no fancy cherry-pickers or concrete floors for us! :)

Nah...they're just using what they have, and getting it done.

Hell, I've done over 20 engine swaps the same way, and my balls are normal sized. ;)

A squadron of USAF Tactical Air Command North American F-100D Super Sabres seen at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, on a rest stop on the way across. Look closely to see the D-model's kinked refueling probe under the right wing. I'd say this is about 1963-64, maybe '65 since they are still in natural metal. SEA (Southeast Asia) camouflage was just about to come into use on aircraft operating in the SEA theater. Things were just starting to heat up in Vietnam when this photo was taken and no doubt several of these "Huns" wound up in a million pieces in the jungle. My uncle flew them in '66-'67 and then went on to the F-105, having ejected from an F-100D after taking small-arms fire over South Vietnam.

  7. I see guys out here using tree limbs all the time and then I see tree limbs just fall for no reason. I guess when you pull your engine you just make sure it's not that limbs day. lol

Amen to that, brother....:)....I know it's not the safest way, but if you are mindful of all the factors all the time (like keeping body parts clear of the engine, watching the chain, the limb, etc.), it will work.....;)

They call it "traditional" now...we call it "shade-tree"...:)

  9. Not stupid just using what is available. Improvising, overcoming a small problem of location.

I'm going to go to Cuba one day. Hopefully before the embargo is lifted and a little of "Old Cuba" still exists.

I think the early 65s could get a 409 and I dont think I would ever hire them to work on my cars,I think they cause more damage then they repair.

  26. There's a gentleman in Milwaukee/Waukesha Wisconsin driving his Factory 65 409 dual quad 4 speed Maroon Chevy! He's got his bill of sale from when he bought it in Dec of 64...

I'll see if I can dig up the Photo's

    Hard to tell really.

    Yes to 1965 for sure.

Going in or out? It's pretty dirty, so I'd say out.

Strange thing is that bellhousing adaptor appears to be for the cast iron powerglide trans. I thought that was phased out in 62.

Plus the engine has a road draft tube. 1963 and up had the road draft tube adaptor that went to the air filter tube. I also thought the 64-65 used a twist on oil filler cap (not real sure though).

Has an alternator, that's correct for 65.

    ---

Or maybe they're dropping an old 348 into a car they're getting rid of. I bought complete 68 Z28 302 from a guy that was letting the car back to GMAC as a repo, all he wanted was $200 cash and a tired 283 to bolt in. I happily obliged him with cash and a $10 283 from a local junkyard.

  29. Photo 9279 is the way we did it but we used a re-enforced header of the garage door frame, untill a couple of years into it and we'd rent Blue Bird Motor Lifts.

Edit. Speaking of which. I am 60 years old and still have my Dad's block and fall and chains he had from befor I was born. If I were able to use them the way I did when I started at 15, i would still use them the same way. Somethings are forever.
