So i just bought this boat...its rough but something ive always wanted. 1947 Chris Craft Custom Sedan my boat picture of one restored
You my friend have a lot of work ahead of you but have a good time. I know it can be done, I have a friend here that restores wood boats and he has started with less. Good luck!
Does that have a chris craft straight six in her? Those run so smooooth and sounds just as good.I hope you got all the hardware with it???Try and make it up to Buffalo show next week
Good luck with that outstanding boat! I had a 32' Chris Craft commander and boy that was a lot of work, but nothing beats the smell and shine of freshly varnished mahogany, even if your shoulders ache. Geoffrey
yep its got the straight 6....the boat is 100% complete...all the hardware is there...i did my research on it before i bought it... if you think cars are expensive to work on wait till you look into classic boats
Oh God! envy envy envy! That is in my opinion the prettiest of the Chris/Craft boats. How's it feel to own the pretties of the pretty? My Grandfather had one at the family lake home up in northern Minnesota when I was a little kid. I hate to admit it, but my aunt had a bad habit of sinking it once a year, if it was considered needed or not! Always repaired and refitted though, just like new. He eventually just would no longer let her run around in it! A Chris/Craft wood boat is on my list of must haves in life, but not real practical for a desert dweller...
Ha! No kidding, nice roofline, windshield angle and hardtop look to the restored version. It was a few years later before many Detroit offerings had that kind of profile. In that sense, maybe not so O/T afterall. Later, Kinky6
It's on my very long list of things I want to build. I'm looking for a 32' speedster. Hope the wood is better than it looks in the pics. It'll be quite a project, but worth it in the long run.
When I was in my 20's I bought a Century Woody,.... Great boat,.... but expensive,... I was in Boyne City in the mid 70's and accidentally ran across a old guy that had a Chris Craft Cobra in his garage near Lake Charlevoix,.... (I knew what I was looking at,...but I had never restored a boat before,.... Not to mention a wood boat) I really fell in love with that boat,... did some finagling and traded the Century and a mitt full of cash for the Cobra,...... Brought it back to where I was living,... looked at it,... looked at it some more,..... covered it up,..... the closer I looked,... the worse it got,.... Finally I met a guy that worked for the old Chris Craft dealer in Boyne City,... I was introduced to the world of Dry Rot and Pith,... I ended selling the Cobra without touching it. I have thought about that boat many times over the years,.... and wish I would have stored it, or stuck with it, and at least tried. I was told the old Cobra was out slapping the waves again a few years later,.. and it was a sight to behold,..... I never did see it finished,.... but was glad to know it was serving the purpose it was intended for,.... Some folks told me "A boat is a hole of air in the water that you throw money into",... maybe thats true,... But I still I can remember the solid, powerful feeling of that old Century cutting through the water,.... and the wet stacks singing there song on a cool early morning run on Higgins lake,..... That is a feeling that stays with you all your life. Congratulations on the project,..... looks good,.... stay with it!
"A hardtop version of the 22' SPORTSMAN, the CUSTOM SEDAN was catalogued by Chris-Craft as a separate model and built from 1947 through 1954. Pre-war 22's had been available with a hardtop, but the design was boxy and plain. For the post-war version, Chris-Craft waited a year and designed a streamlined hardtop similar to the larger post-war sedan cruisers. The result was one of the most attractive hardtop runabouts of all time, with opening windshields, sliding side windows, and a large varnished foredeck unique to the SEDAN. As with the SPORTSMAN, most of the SEDANS built during 1947 and 1948 were painted white and most built from 1949 through 1954 were varnished. Production totaled 436."
I've been around wood boats most of my life. Dad bought a new Century Resorter in '55 and I've loved them ever since... Hackers, barrelback's, Riva's...all really great. But this one is totally RAD!! Never seen one before. What a GREAT boat.
Hello kwmpa, what are you going to use for power in that craft? I have a a Chrysler 331 factory marine motor that I pulled from a relic that would be nice in a vintage boat.
as muct as i have thought about chagine out the engine to something bigger im going to keep the stock inline six...im trying to do a period restoration on it...
That will be a beautiful boat when you get done. I have a friend here in Minn who has a 1930 Chris Craft and Hacker Craft. Amazing machines. Absolutly gorgeous. Good luck.
