No offense, but you should refrain from posting on custom car threads, you obviously have no concept of what the make up of a traditional kustom is..in the late 50's and early 60's, almost every kustom wore dummy spots or non functional lakers, or both..They are not some contrived, cliche adornment only used today...Please educate yourself before spewing garbage....
I know spots are traditional (so are coontails and curbfeelers), but (to keep it traditional) they look like warts on Natalie Woods nose. Larry T
It doesn't need them but IMHO I think they would look good, ONLY, if you can lay your hands on real ones. Nothing worse than fakes! Thats a beautiful build you have going on there, can I have it when you finish it?? No?!?....... Why not/ Doc.
Again, hot rod guys posting and criticizing on a custom car thread..I base my observation by looking at your profile.. hot rods, harleys and race cars are prevalent, but zero kustom stuff.....
Yep, I'm a hotrod guy, but I've been around the whole car deal since the 50's/60's. I still don't understand taking the time and effort to build a car with smooth flowing lines and then putting a hiccup right in the middle of it. Looks like pretty basic design stuff to me. It's just an opinion. And I just checked out your profile, looks like your Kustoms album runs about 50/50 spots and not. Right? Larry T
funny. since I don't agree with you I have no concept. I know all about old style customs. I don't need any education. been interested in them since I was a kid and they were out of style in the 70's. I even put spots on all my custom models when I was a kid. since then my tastes have changed. all a spot does is break up the smooth lines the builder tried so hard to achieve. I like spots, but only real ones. I had one on my stock bodied 49 4 door. I think one of the funniest things I see at shows is some car with dummy spots mounted on the hood. if you want to ad useless trinkets to your car go for it. customs should be smooth and flow.
Only ONE way to go here, if you want it to be traditional California Kustom style. That is to have spots. But study hard on the position before mounting them. They are the icing on the cake on a traditional kustom. Although, I agree with RPW to use 552's instead. I will change to that on my Mercury for next year. 112's are more late -40's. You would end up in the 1951-53 segment, if that is where you are heading. To raise the front an inch and get rid of the gaslid would be great too. It is truly a very nice car. Good luck! Kustoms are kustoms and hot rods are hot rods. They have totally different preferences. And yes, I have both.
Nice chop on a nice car. Congratulations. Since you asked... I guess if you thought you'd get any use out of them, I'd say go ahead. But if you want to go to the trouble and expense of adding them just for ornamentation, hey, it's your time and money. If you're gonna go to the trouble and expense, at least get the real thing. Fake spotlights and fake lakes pipes are the automotive equivalent of the dickey. Continental kits on cars where they weren't offered: clip-on tie.
Just listen to the little guy in your head - either way is right - either way the car is going to look great. And either way some guy will say " you should of" or "should not of". So do what your gut says.
VERY , VERY , nice work . the profile is killer. I vote yes on the spots, and I know the fake ones are cheezy, but they do have a place in history and can look just fine, although fake is usually not the way to go, depends on the car.I used fake and was going for a watson look on my cad, although I toned it down alot from what I was going to paint it.
Fake spotlights are a part of history. Customs in 50's had them, that makes them real. I also like fake boobs.
I know he did terrible,so when I decided that I needed spots to hide the lousy chop I called someone who also had a bad chop..... Jim (owner of the Hirohata merc) and he made me a template to make sure I put my appletons in the perfect place so people wouldnt notice my lousy chop. thanks Jim
