Does anyone know how to take the chrome wiper covers off the shafts? I have the whole assembly out of the car but I can't figure out how to remove the shafts so I can send the chrome part out to be redone. Thanks
Do you mean the chromed viper "covers", that are outside on the lower trim of windshield? They are bolted from inside under the dash.. see manual pic..:http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/01body/1-24.jpg
Like Squirrel says, they are staked or peened together. They were meant to be replaced as a unit. You might be able to grind the bottom of the shaft off and remove the lever arm and weld it back together after rechroming, but I would want some extras in hand first, in case it doesn't work out.
I am not sure either, but I need to do this for my 52. Post up when you do this.... Ryan in Maple Ridge
Thanks for the advice. After looking at them in the daylight today I decided to try the same thing R Pope suggested and I carefully ground the the bottom of the shaft off. It looks like I should be able to then weld the shaft back onto the arms. I hope it works
If not, I have the one in the picture....don't have the other side...don't have a car to put it on.... But you should be able to make it work. Hopefully the shaft will still fit in the hole after the chrome shop gets done with it!
