51 Chevy wiper question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kan't spell, Sep 14, 2010.

  1. Does anyone know how to take the chrome wiper covers off the shafts? I have the whole assembly out of the car but I can't figure out how to remove the shafts so I can send the chrome part out to be redone. Thanks

I'm pretty sure they're pressed on and staked, not very easy to take apart and put back together.

Like Squirrel says, they are staked or peened together. They were meant to be replaced as a unit. You might be able to grind the bottom of the shaft off and remove the lever arm and weld it back together after rechroming, but I would want some extras in hand first, in case it doesn't work out.

Find some off an AZ car, you could probably run them as is.

I am not sure either, but I need to do this for my 52.

Post up when you do this....

  7. Thanks for the advice.

After looking at them in the daylight today I decided to try the same thing R Pope suggested and I carefully ground the the bottom of the shaft off. It looks like I should be able to then weld the shaft back onto the arms. I hope it works:)

If not, I have the one in the picture....don't have the other side...don't have a car to put it on....

But you should be able to make it work. Hopefully the shaft will still fit in the hole after the chrome shop gets done with it!

  9. Thanks for the offer. I hope it still fits too. But isn't that why they make small round files?:D
