It was in Hot Rod or Car Craft in the mid sixties. It was powered by a turbonique motor.

Kitty O' Neal still holds the fasted speed ever recorded for 1/4 mile at 396 MPH in a hydrogen peroxide rocket car.
She had an unofficial speed of 412 MPH in 1/4 mile.

Thanks Mazooma1 for the Info. Wow 412mph  what did she have for tires? How did she stop?

Anyone have pictures of rocket cars I don't think I've ever seen one?
I've seen that rocket go cart!

    Hugh Tucker's AA/SR

Thought I'd post a few pix of what may well have been one of the most dominant cars ever in any particular class, Hugh Tucker's 1928 Chevy AA/SR.

The first pic shown, by the way, is the car's first ever outing at Santa Maria after a hard week building it.

    Here's a chronology from Hugh

1961: The car was powered by a 400 inch Olds normally aspirated with six Strombergs. I was using a 1937 LaSalle transmission and a Columbia two-speed rear end.

Late 1961: Blower, B&M Hydro & rear suspension: Went to a blown 476 inch late Olds and a B&M Hydro. After initial tests I went to a 57 Pontiac rear end and ladder bars along with 1/4 elliptical springs. The car was still pretty heavy, around 3000 pounds.

Spring & Summer 1962: Light weight front suspension Put the front of the car on a diet. Went to a tube axle, magnesium wheels, Crosley disc brakes,
homemade aluminum hubs on 40 Willys spindles, and aluminum radius rods, tie rod, and drag link. Lost about 200 pounds off of the front end.

Late Fall 1963: Light weight body, interior & roll bar Fiberglass body, 3 point roll bar, light weight interior. Lost about 400 pounds.

Early 1965: 4 point roll bar, headrests, paint, front coil springs Full 4-point roll bar with headrests (to raise the center of gravity), coilover front shocks, new paint job & gold leaf lettering, move fuel tank to trunk.

    Winter 65/66: Chrysler Hemi

    Spring 1966: Torqueflite transmission

September 1966: Wrinkle Wall tires and narrow rims

1998: Hugh's son, Hugh Jr, found the car in a barn in Washington state where it had sat for the last 18 years. The children of the guy who owned it, didn't even know anything about it. They had never even seen it!

February 1, 2002: Fully restored! Hugh & Charlene stopped on their way to the NHRA Museum to allow me to take a few pix before it was lettered. Even got a pic with me in it...I thought it fit rather well!

If you meant me, I've had 7 race cars and some other street toys over the years.;)

If you didn't mean me, sorry for the interruption of the thread, don't want to piss anyone off.

  25. Marlo is still kicking and this car is hanging in the rafters of his shop. Rumors can be a sore subject at times His current project (Project 550) has a huge following on the net, 11+ plus years in the making with testing just around the corner.

  26. Couple of pictures of Marlo Treit former rides, the twin engine bike was featured in the Feb. 1962 Hot Rod and another of his three wheel. www.target550.com would be his web site

Get outta here, this cat not only survived that three wheeler, he's doing the target 550? Wow.
That said, I've gone 192 in the 1/4 on a bike, but I wouldn't sit on that thing up there!

they ran the car on the opposite end of el mirage as scta runs its events; measured a 1/4 mile and ran her through the telephone poles toward the scta end of the lake bed.

tires were billet aluminum with a dual-knurled tread pattern that left marks on the surface that looked like a zipper.

i'm guessing she stopped it with chutes and brakes.

since it was a hal needham project, it was most likely not timed according to any sanctioning bodies' rules and, like the pudweiser rockect car, i don't know of anyone, outside of needham or stan barrett, who gives it any credence whatsoever... except for being a stunt!

Yes! He was killed in Scottsdale Az at Beeline Dragway . I was standing behind his car when he left the line. Almost to the finish line his car took a hard left and rolled end over in the air and hit a pole. I think it was a loaner car or rented Pinto from Don Nicholson that was painted red, white and blue. Was a sad day at Beeline. I have a picture of the car flying apart in the air. I'll see if i can find it. RIP Irv. John
