History So, What old car or truck did you grow up with you wish you had now??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dustyoldbodyman, Sep 17, 2010.

  1. I though of this idea while talking with a car buddy (H.A.M.B. lurker) at work today as he was telling stories of the '60 Bel-Aire 2dr hardtop he was rather sure he rode home from hospital in right after he was born. I could not remember seeing a 1960 Bel Air 2 door Hardtop and thought - what a cool post! what cars were around your place when you were a kid? are they still around or do you just wish you could have them back? I remember a 2 cycle saab 99 (new in 68) a '65 F-100 I would love to get (without that catastrophic rustout) a 64 rambler 2 door post - which would make a cool drag car now, my Mom used to talk about her 46 Pontiac fastback - very cool - and my dad had a '56 Chevy 2 Door Tradesman wagon - black and white - that a neighbor of mine currently has the twin to. Dad sold his in the late 50s over a bad rear wheel bearing... Bummer. Anyway - give it up and tell us what your parents or your brother/sister used to have around your place when you were a kid - there has to be some really cool stuff to tell about!!!!:cool:

My Dad owned a used car lot from 1964 thru 1972. I never knew what car to look for when he picked me up at school!!
I used to go to the cr auctions with him. We'd buy like 10 Cadillacs at a time.
Do remember the 59 Cad convertable and then Mom & Dad both with 65 Cad convertables One Green on Red.

My grandad and pop built houses right after ww2,dad got a running 32 Ford roadster as part trade in a house sale and gave it too mom as a dayly driver, she loved it,even had a new top on it and seats covered nice :D,we had it for about 6 months when one day mom was mad as hell at dad for trading the 32 for a near new chainsaw to clear some land to build more houses, she took his car and told him to ride that chainsaw to work:eek:

Wow....my dad had TONS of old cars (they weren't all that old in the 60's...).

I'd like to have the '47 Packard now...or the 4? Hudson pickup truck!

Almost forgot...the '36 Ford 3/4 ton panel truck that was the vehicle I drove around on the farm @ 8 years old...

A 1945 chevy 1 1/2 ton flatbed truck, former military. I learned to drive in it on the farm when I was a kid. It still had the original 216 babbit rod 6 and unsynchronized 4 speed with a manual 2 speed rear axle operated by another stick that stuck up from the floorboard. Made a bit of cash hauling hay and s**** with it. Wish I had it now....

a bit off this particular topic but my Mom had a 31 Chevrolet coupe in the late 40's before I was born. it bent the pushrods on a regular basis and she replaced them all by herself. that is where I got my mechanical ap***ude from. Mom is 84 and my nieces still refer to her as "Grandma fix-it" since she was always fixing something.

we had a 57 Merc wagon with wood on the side, 53 Chevy 4 door, red 65 Rambler, 66 Caprice 2 door, and a pair of 67 Datsuns.. a wagon and a sedan, but the car I'd like to have was the 53 (?) Chevrolet 3/4 ton panel truck my Dad drove for T & T Linen Supply in Oakland. dark blue on the bottom and yellow on the top with the name painted on the side. once in a while he came home with a 57 Chevy sedan delivery, but I like the panel truck better.

  8. I forgot to mention I grew up on 40 acres and learned to drive in that 65 F-100. 3 on the tree and the "big" six... sure did spin the tires nice in the field out back. great stories so far. I wish I had that Chinook for my morning commute sometimes....

  9. I learned to drive (legally) in my step dad's 55 Chevy. It was brand new and I didn't even put a dent in it. It was a 210 2 door sedan with a 6 cylinder and 3 speed. The last time I saw it was in Warrensburg MO about 20 years ago. When my step dad traded it off the top was faded and the dealer painted the top white. There was no doubt it was his. Tried to find the owner but was never able to track him down.

It was the end of the 70's & the 80's had just started & "Cl***ic Car" was still a farely new term, well at least most kids were'nt too familier with it, especial the kids at the elementry catholic school I went to. You have to pay for these schools which means you had some money, new cars, & nice home, they were all just old cars.

The Car, a 1963 Convertable Super Sport Nova, red on red & STICK!!!

It was will cool when your parents brought you lunch from Carl's Jr. across the street. But when my mother brought us lunch and/or pick us up in it, it was the worst!!! The car had no hubcaps, a couple whitewalls, the top was ripped pretty bad, and the paint . . . . We use to hate that car. You know, come to think of it, maybe it was an old car.

You know the real kicker, that's my daily driver on the left. Life sure is funny like that.

My Dad used to get cars for free or dirt cheap. He would get a car drive it for awhile, give it away for free and get another one. Once he had a friend that had a white 56 Porche speedster and everytime we went to this friends house, I would always go check out the speedster. One day, I was about 14, he asked me if I wanted the car, I could have it. But Dad said "No" because we all ready had too many cars parked at the house. And up to today, I still wished I had gotten it.

My grandfather owned a Chevy dealership, and his hobby was riding horses. In the late '60s, he used a trade-in to tow his two horse trailer to shows---a '57 BelAir two door sedan, factory power pack stick car. Wonder what it would be worth now, for the parts alone?

My neighbors mom's 60 New Yorker maroon wagon
My dad's 27 Chev 2 door sedan that was always sitting in the barn
My neighbors 63 Impala 409/425 4 speed, maroon w/black interior
My dad's friends' black 61 Impala, 348/4 speed
The bright jade green 40 Ford coupe I'd see every week or two up the street from my house, whitewalls, dropped axle, white boards, never a spot of dirt.

My folks had a 1957 Chevy 210 wagon, with a 283 four barrel, 3-speed manual trans. Dad trophied with it at the drags against 2-door posts and hard tops, street raced it a lot too. Sold the Chevy in about 1965, bought a 1957 Fleetwood Cadillac for $500.00. Mom hated the Cadillac for some reason, so they bought a new 1966 Plymouth Fury, 383 4-barrel 4-speed, 4 -door! A real sleeper, street raced all the time. My sister and I both learned to drive on this car, and made us Mopar people ever since.

Mom had a maroon 1963 Galaxie ragtop and later a big block 1973 boattail Riviera. Dad had a 1956 Victoria and a 1965 El Camino. I got to drive the Buick, fun car, but the others had p***ed on before I got a chance to get behind the wheel.

This is the last time that I saw my high school ride. It was a fun car.

My grandad (a farmer) had a 1954 Customline brand new and as i grew up and it grew older it became the Farm car - man could that car travel over the paddocks on his farm fast - however all the dung and **** rotten the ol girl out. It was the last of the flatheads and had a self seeking radio and upmarket upholstery however the best bit was the old sacks in the boot that the dogs loved to ride in.

I still have my first car a 1950 Stude Champion. My dad bought it in 1969 for $50. I drove it to high school in 1972-74. The only other car I sold and wished I hadn't was a 1963 T-bird. I kept all the rest of them.

My dad had gotten rid of all his cool cars by the time I came along. My grandfather had a 62 F-100 that I always wanted. Nothing special, but I loved that truck. I knew where it was a few years ago, but I lost track of it.

Well I didn't grow up with it, but I was in my mom's pregnant belly.
My dad had a Studebaker pick-up with a Ford 390 in it. I wish he would of kept that one. I think it was a 54-55, some where around there.
I only get to look at pictures of it. Instead I grew up with a '76 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. I'd take it too.

  30. Dad had a full on Factory sponsorship (as in they give you a literal Rocket to race ;)) from Olds for the 1970 season. Very bare stripper F85. Set a National record with it. Last seen in Spencer Iowa in 1976. Ralleye Yellow post car, been looking for it ever since.
