Evidently they often did. I have seen pictures of the Edisons and Fords camping and touring around the country. I think for those who could afford it travel was a big deal. I have a picture somewhere of a great great aunt standing on Lookout Mountain over looking over Chattanooga , Tennessee. She was from Nebraska, but they drove in an open touring car all over the country.

“An Officer is pictured standing beside one the Motorcycles used for messenger service by the New York World’s Fair 1939. He is wearing the official uniform of the exposition police force, consisting of oxford gray coat, tan breeches, trooper’s hat, tan shirt and blue tie, leather boots and Sam Browne belt. The letters on the collar will be NYWF, giving him his official status.”

Kool66, THANKS for the info on the observation towers being the likely vantage point for those great "aerial" photos (your post # 3920). Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been on the road the last two weeks.

On a DIFF theme: These WRECK pix always seem to spur lots of comments & spec. I don't think the one below has been posted previously on this thread.

I remember this one from Shorpy. That's bootleg hootch next to the wreck, isn't it?

MrFire, as usual, mate, YOU come up with some
GRRRRREAT pix! This CLASSIC shot is from a 1924
race in Wales. I don't know any more. But I'd sure
like to know if the guy was nimble enough to avoid
    flipping the Bugatti!

BigCheese, THANKS for the details. I saw it on sale on eBay as a print. The seller had no details. Your explanation makes perfect sense. And HAMBers love bootleggin' and moonshine-runnin' stories and pix!!!

Sure is, and the guy dressed like a house painter at left, puffing on his pipe, has that look of sadness - like he wishes the cop would simply walk away so he could pull a few bottles for himself. The Packard is very hard to nail down, as there are parts from several years and series - which could lead you to believe the rum runner was also a bit of a rodder. Imagine!

I hope someone can ID this car. The ladies sure liked lights - the drums plus that good sized spotlight make for a nice setup. A racy looking machine.
