I forwarded this onto my friend, Chris Summers, the current ACD Club Duesenberg historian and this is what he told me this morning.

The car in the picture is a Derham Town Car on the SWB chassis, J-114 or the other car that doesn't exist (I can't recall the J number off the top of my head). J-114 survives in Utah and will be at Auburn next year (2011) following cosmetic restoration.

The car in "It's A Wonderful Life" is Murphy Town Car J-393, restyled by Bohman & Schwartz. It survives in CA.

I've seen a shot of the Boat Caddy in better shape i believe years ago in a Special Interest Auto magazine i think. It could have been a feature on odd bodied cars.It seems the famous Moxie Horse car was also included.

My late departed grandfather told me about transporting moonshine in large square cans labeled "Maple Syrup". The can had a false small can inside under the cap that really did have syrup, and the rest of the can was moonshine. He brought them to Oregon.

Interesting! I've heard about cars with gas tanks set up to hold liquor, and the real gas tank was concealed somewhere else on the car. I'm told one had to be careful about where to get gas, lest the attendant blow the whistle. Never heard about the syrup gimmick, but it sure makes sense.

I think the banner says "home of the Mitchell and the Grant sixes" and the sign says "the only car that made Pike's Peak on high without an adjustment."

In the a similiar vein a older gentleman who worked for me years ago told me of his Uncles bootlegging in twenties and thirties here in Detroit. He bought his malt to make beer from the Strohs Brewrey in Detroit. The brewery had a set of large sedans with large tanks taking up the rear compartment that sat level with the doors. They would go to the brewrey and pick up the assigned car take it home and he would hook up a rubber line on the underside and run it thru the basement window where the beer was made.Strohs couldn't make beer but malt wasn't illegal. They also made ice cream to help for the lack of beer revenue.
