it's funny, because more people know me now by my HAMB name than my real name. i think that internet alter egos are a product of the desire for a certain amount of anonymity, and a little identity protection. which doesn't really answer your original question. i don't think anyone actually answered your original question. but i am general gow, now. or gow, or the general. (the name comes from a conflation of the term gow job with general gao's chicken) general gow. anyway, my mom calls me Mark.
first, i hate my screen name, now. I came up with it just because i spend alot of time under the hood of my cars. Now, its mostly associated with rat rods, and I don't want that. Or, a derragatory "urban" term for a neighborhood slut. neither are good descriptions of myslef.
Nick-names are a lot easier for me to remember. In fact, I prefer it. When I only see someone every few months, they have an advantage that I envy. It's easier for them to remember Groucho, than it is for me to remember Steve, or any other common name, making it somewhat embarrasing that I don't remember their name, and they do mine. I was just asking why people signed their other name under every post.
I got the nickname Animal in1973, while in the US Navy. A certain British lady discovered me and a young lady from San Diego in the back bar of a club in Athens, Greece performing unnatural acts. She shrieked "You Bleeeeedin' Animal" and the name stuck. I've got friends all over who don't even know my real name. I was listed in the phone book as Animal until I got married and had kids.
i prefer it in many cases too. but i find in real life that most people prefer to be called by their real names. so instead of steve, i can remember them as 'axegrinder-steve.' and call them steve. most of the time, anyway. but if i were to guess, i think people sign their real name because of a desire to be known by that name over all the internet identity stuff.
I was called rustrustler by a fellow clubmember because I would buy and sell old cars to subsidize my old car habit. When I joined here it seemed logical to use it. As far as signing my name I agree with hemisteve that it just seems proper.
To be honest, I think I might have been one of the first ones on the HAMB to do that (if not THE first), back when we still had the yellow smiley with sunglasses. I don't know why, other than it was how I was taught to end a written letter. Then after I was on here for awhile, a HAMBer in the UK left his computer on at work and some co-workers posted an admission of homosexuality on here using his account. So its a "if you don't see me sign it, I didn't write it..." kinda thing with me now. JOE
my screen name came up while looking for a job on-line ..had a lot of jobs that i applied for ,, and put them in a file ,, had to name the file ... it just stuck ... that was 3 years ago --- still no job ... BUT ON THE + SIDE ,,,,,, now the doctors say that i'm permanently disabled and now i get a check for working on my toys ... and i have to keep my names separate ... in the motorcycle world ,,, they named me c-bob.. but thats a whole nother story ...
My orginal screen name was Sgnl50. I used to own a company Signal 50 Industries ( I restored vintage leather fire helmets) and Signal 50 used to be radio code for a working fire. I'm a career firefighter so it worked.. I changed it to 100% Matt because I was involved in a project called "100%" Which later morphed into "100% Kulture" I had a slightly different vision for 100% so I stepped away from it. But most people still call me 100% Matt.
The town I live in in has more foggy days then sunny days-FogTown my friends call me- shit I can't lie I have no friends
Hey MAn, cool thread.. I like a thread that makes people comment.. I ahvent gone through the whole thread but I'm surprised that the lame asses who hate anything thought provoking havent hit this thread with a "Lame. Boring, Who cares, etc etc..".. GOod Job MAn, Anyway back to the thread.. HRod 50.. People think HRod stands for Hot Rod, which it doesnt. A friend of mine is a famous baseball and we have the same last name. SO after we becamse friends, people started referring to me as HRod, which is my first and lastname combined. Hugo Rodriguez, and 50 stands for my 1950 Mercury.. So "HRod 50" it is.. I go by my middle name on here Tony, which is short for Antonio.. Probably too much info, but f-it I'm bored...
What is this sex thing people keep talking about? I`m sure I used to do it as I have two children, the wife says I`m the father.
I raced a 380 jawa cz in the A.H.R.M.A. motocross series. Won several races and 2 national titles about 10 years ago at a riders meeting someone says well here comes theczking, and it just kinda stuck
I would visit my 89 year old aunt in South Florida and always drive a big OLD Cadillac so we could take her out and she would be comfortable in the back seat. She would call me Cadillac Man. One time I had to go in my 89 Allante with no back seat... She loved it! Wife got behind the seat.... Yoga Teacher .. Cadman and Scott were taken back in Jan of 2005 Cadman
Funny, I thought I gave you legitimate responses and reasons why I sign "Malcolm". Maybe it only makes sense to me
I am John. I've had a few nicks over the years, HS nick was Johnny Reb and if you met me it would not fit me.
It's hard enough remembering names as it is and on the HAMB most everyone has two names..............Oh well just played along.........my given name is Steve and if you ever saw my stuff you would understand patina, tried to play along and do something that made since.
At one time there were five guys with the same first and last names as mine in this county. That and no one but the guys in UK seem to know how to spell my last name correctly. Had guy in Texas argue that I had spelled it wrong. Mr48Chev came about because my first three choices for a Yahoo Id were taken. That and I have had my 48 since 1973 and it is part of the family and my daughter has already laid claim to it. But I could be Chopt48, Dave46, Sea Dragon or Scout A 1 9 as somewhere in my split identity situation I also have those identities. That and the only two nicknames that I ever got tagged with I hated and still get called by one although the other one caused the originator to end up with more than a few bumps and bruises many years ago. And I'd say that the majority of us might just go by a screen name rather than our given name just as a bit of privacy protection so certain individuals might just have a hell of a lot harder time finding out where our goodies are stashed.
when you are 11yrs old and your named is casildo and every body makes fun of you(even spanish people) you better come with a nickname quick, hence casey.my last name is RODriguez, and thats how i arrived at my member name.ps I agree with bad bob,rad rods its the stage a car is before it becomes a "real" HOT ROD.
I'm another Dave, so I just use a screename so I don't fade into the "Dave" group..... Dave must have been a popular name in the late 40's/early 50's, cause there sure are a lot of us.....
Back in the late '50's & early '60's ,the trend was everybody was "Sumthin Man" ,Vetteman,,Swimmerman,,Chevyman,,Fordman ,,Smittyman,,Switchblademan,,,Zipgunman,,Calman,,Terriorman,, So,,,it was a natural for me to get the "handle" Connman,,even the cop that wrote me that Excessive Speed Ticket called me that ,,and i'd never met him before ,,in Basic in '61 ,,in the Air Force my Drill instructor called me that ,,it stuck all these years ,,So,,,i use it still today ,,
