I was thinking the title of this thread would have gone the other way...

Lying to old ladies to buy their car for less then it's worth.

    What a happy surprise.

she's a great lady... bought the car brand new.. sold it to my dad 4 years ago with 65,000 miles.. no rust (not even in the rear frame rails, standard G-Body GM rust), perfect interior.. white/burgandy guts, vinyl top, ralley wheels, power everything etc... She came in one day for some repairs (intake gasket and shocks/springs i think) and asked dad if he'd like to buy it... he was shocked (he'd been trying since she bought it), said yes asked how much.. she said $900... SOLD... got woke up at 7am on Christmas Morning (dad somehow hid it from me for 2 months) walked outside barefoot and blindfolded... saw it sittin' in the driveway and went absolute ape shit... I was the happiest 17yr old kid on the face of the earth.. there was a car I had drooled over in our shop all my life and it was mine?!?!?!? My dad had a big part in it.. But it took 30yrs for her to give up her baby.. I love my old '22 Dodge but that ol' Cutlass isn't goin anywhere....

My story is about 180° different than the old lady stories. The other day my 17 year old son took my '48 Ford panel truck out and stopped for some gas. As he's filling the truck he said a nice young lady came up, started looking it over and asked if it was his, he replied "No, it's my dad's". She replied, "Nice" and walked away. When he told me the story I laid down a new rule; If a nice looking girl ever shows the slightest bit of interest in any of my old vehicles while he's driving it I officially give him permission to say it's his, no matter what.

All these stories about being nice to little old ladies in various ways prove that HAMBers are some of the nicest hoodlums around.

    Still Happens...

I went to Lowes last night in my 56 GMC Stepside. Woman and her husband crossed in front of me near the main exit. Woman steps over toward me and says "Is this a 57" I said Yes! ... She kissed her husband and said "He is so smart :)"

    YEP!

In one day I had 4 different old people stop me and ask me about my '41 Ford. Only one of them got it right. Then that guy (late 70s) starts telling me about how he had one back when. "Yeah, I cut the top off, had a Carson top made for it, reversed the spring eyes, and had the Flatty relieved....". I wish I had more time to listen to him, I'm sure he could have talked my ears off, but he was working at McDonalds, and I didn't want to get him in trouble.
I used to go cruisin' for chicks, now that I have a great family, I go cruisin' for old folks.

Having had collector type cars for many years it is my attitude to never forget that these things make other people (more than just yourself) happy. I have a cobra replica which never seems to fail to put a smile on the face of a very wide range of folks. It makes me feel good when I can make someone smile, if only for a couple of minutes, especially nowdays. Just about the most common question I get is "is that a real cobra?" to which I almost always tell the truth, "no, its a reproduction that I built myself". But every once in awhile someone will ask in such a way that it seems very important to them that they see a REAL cobra, so I tell them a little white lie, don't want to rain on anyone's dream.

Well, they never really asked if it was a "real original 1966 Cobra', did they. So yes, your car is a real Cobra. I'll bet that the bits you used were indeed branded "Cobra"

  11. Man I can't believe that you would do that. I mean hell I would lie to you guys but I damned sure wouldn't lie to no little old lady. She might be somebody's mom. ;)

I get that a lot in FL; demographics I suppose significantly contribute, "I used to have one...blah, blah, blah..." while always polite, I typically follow up with; "got any parts for it?"...

My story is a bit 180 degrees! At 79 I sometimes have to explain to the younger set that my car is not a coupe!
And that my wife & I have driven it 5 times across the USA, 300,000 miles to date.-----We celebrate our 60th anniversary tomorrow!---Don:D:D

One time I was at a gas station in my '31 roadster and an old guy walked around my car, looking it over, and then asked what year Corvette this was.

I knew why, the only badging anywhere on the car is on the finned aluminum '62 Corvette valve covers.

    I said 1931. :D

  16. Im actually surprised because it was a guy. I later found out he was 82 and this was around 2004. He said he owned a 50 mercury just like mine. Well.. my car was a 53 plymouth, its a bit hard to mistake for a merc. But i just agreed with him and asked him about his rig unfortunately. You dont want to hear about all the ass an 80+ year old got in the back seat of his rig in the 50s.

I had a 1946 Dodge WC26. Ammo carrier big suburban lookin monster. It was a shell.
    DEUCE DADDY DON,,,woweee, congradulations.
One day I'm sittin at a light and this lady next to me starts hollerin.
I think, "Great, what fell off". She's screamin she used to build em when she was young. Heck, I was sittin next to Rosie the Riveter. I pulled over so she could look. She was a wonderful ol gal and loved the ride I gave her. She commented, when the rust chunk fell in her hair, that they both were at least still running.
    Great thread.

my wife works at a nursing home here in staten island, so we came up with the idea of holding a small car show at the home for the residents and their families. it was closed to the general public, no stupid trophys or judging. it cant begin to tell you how happy those residents were to see those cars and reminisce about the old days. all proceeds from the 50/50 and food sales went right back to the residents fund to use for field trips etc. to hear some 90 something woman tell my friend with the extremely non HAMB friendly duece roadster that her father had one just like it was worth the time alone!

My Dad (mid 70s) does the lying for me. Not intentionally mind you. He just forgets the details sometimes. He and my Mom meet us at a cruise nite and after a quick stroll he'll sit in a chair and answer questions from people. He can come up with some pretty good stuff. He gets the yrs. right but engines, trannies and stuff are a diff. story. Most people don't know the difference anyhoo !!! :D

Apparently you don't think 18 year old kids deserve respect.

Struck an old bloke who noticed the warbirds mag I was carrying. He starts talking about De Havilland Mosquitos, getting into a bit of detail. So idiot me says "were you ground crew?" He fixes me with a very cold stare and says "I'm Group Captain Bill Fletcher son, I was the Commanding Officer of XXX squadron from '42 til '44." We ended up having a beer or three there and then. I now know what max revs to ground-run a Merlin to before it jumps the chocks......

DDDon: Is that the movie starlet you married? I did the same thing, only just 33 years ago..Congratulations!

To all my other HAMB brothers, big Kudos! I rap to 'little ol' ladies' every chance I get; and there are lots of them in this community.
They constantly strike up conversation about my '55 F100, sometimes I see a glint in their eyes...and I'm flattered.

Great stories. What a better way to show all the Non-car people out there that we are good friendly people. I give rides and listen to stories of "I had one just like it" all the time and always feel better for doing it.
