When I was 12-13 years old, sometimes the family would go to a movie and dinner at Ben Franks Restaurant, which is now Mel's Diner, on the Sunset Strip. We'd drive by the Playboy Club and I'd think, "damn, it's gonna be cool to go there someday"....

Only men who wouldn't appreciate Abbe Lane photos didn't dream of going to a Playboy club...and later the mansion.

Don't beleive the lies and the ignorance of others.
If anyone wonders what a free market is or can do just look at the abundance of goods in that photo.
Also, as a result, it's the prosperous free marketeers making the transition from horses to horseless right in front of your eyes.

The Fitch Sprint actually came before the Yenko.
But both John Fitch and Don Yenko realized the possibilities of the Corvair.

A little more on Art Malone -

Art Malone drove the "Mad Dog IV" shown here at Bristol Speedway, to a new closed-course world record of 181.561 mph at the Daytona Speedway in 1961.
Bill France had posted a $10,000 reward to the first person to crack 180 mph after a death caused USAC to remove Daytona from their schedule.
Builder Bob Osiecki took an Indy car and a supercharged fuel injected 413 Chrysler bored to 450 cu in producing 800 hp on alcohol to do it.
Six other drivers including NASCAR great's Curtis Turner and Buck Baker tried their hands before Malone got behind the wheel.
Several blown engines and many shredded tires later Malone ran an estimated 226 mph on the straights and 170 mph in the turns to circle the track in 49.59 seconds.
It cost Osiecki $35,000 to win the $10,000 of which Malone got $2500!

Yup, a REAL Dymaxion, in case anybody thought they all wound
up in museums. Doug Gary said his grandfather's bottling company
acquired it in Washington, D.C., for ad power. It was driven to
Charlotte, NC, where it eventually burned up after its driver forgot
and left the gas cap off after a fill-up. HAMBer Mazooma provided
the link to most of this Dymaxion photo. THANKS, bubba!

After seeing that Corvair with knockoffs...I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't Ralph Nader that stopped Fitch in his tracks...Nader was successful at killing Corvair AND knockoffs.

BTW, those later model Corvairs were pretty cool looking...at least I think so,

My dad had a 60 Corvair, wish I could dig some pics out, I remember he swapped a 3 speed for a 4 speed, he drove it from Santa Ana to LA everyday to work back in the early sixties. One summer it was sittin in the driveway and the rear window blew out on a hot day, it was one airtight sun ofa gun, It sounded like a cannon went off, I was walking down the sidewalk when it happened, glass blew all the way across the street.
