without the center bolt, the leaves are gonna move around under load, for sure, and with the square top bolts, and the crank mount (that wants round top bolts) you're never gonna get it snugged up tight enough to be right.

  2. How is the spring staying together without the center bolt in it? Am I missing something here?

  4. Spooky! I hope his dental coverage is paid up! Put a bolt in that thing please before it takes your head off ( when you have it apart again that is.)

depends on whether he has the whole spring pack in too. the bottom 2/3s is held together with u-clamps.

It still has the spring clamps on it. But you are right, I am kinda playing with fire. I'm going to order the correct ubolts and a center bolt tonight.

I have a similar problem going on in the back of my '35. THe posies spring is loose and appears to need 3/4"-13/16" spacer to really snug in. So I am taking the short leafs from an original pack and cutting them to make the difference and I'll throw them in under the spring so that it's doesn't raise the car up.

I am al for using new pieces when I can....in fact most of my headaches come from the fact that I do. But if you are dealing with some really (dare I say) rat roddy parts then you might be better off either cleaning them up a bit or finding new ubolts. If you order them from Mac's or Carpenter's etc then you know they are the correct application and can start looking else where to see where the slack is coming from.

That makes me think I am missing part of the spring. The whole pack is clamped......which would explain why everything is loose.

It seems to have almost 1 inch top to bottom.....like a few leaves are missing.

I definitely do not intend to run things as they are. I'm just playing around with the parts I have. Actually putting my hands on things and seeing how the parts fit together. What parts I need...etc.

I will be ordering some new parts.

That "crank thingy" uses U-bolts and the lower plate the bolts go through has a raised portion to press against the spring. That was used on all 4 years.

You could remove the ubolt crank aligner "thingy" :D and use this. Parts can be found easily or through a HAMB Aliance Vendor or such.

That's okay, too. Lots of people take leaves out to lower the car. If it's done correctly, it's fine. Then you do something to take up the space like weld a steel spacer to the bottom spring clamp/plate.

yes, true. i didn't mean to give half an answer. lots of folks take the leftover leaves and stack them underneath to fill in the crossmember space.

damn it. Do I need those? I was planning on removing some.....But I would still need some for a spacer. Not knowing what you are buying ****s:(

This may be a ford barn question, but does anyone have a picture of a stock front spring pack?

  15. Keep collecting, soon you will have so many bones and springs that you can build two cars. You will need the parts to fine tune the spring pack either way.

You do have Tardell and Bishops book, no? If not go back to start and do not collect $20 ;)

I have an extra one at home you can borrow. I think it is sitting under the dodge tub in my back yard if you want to go pick it up before I get home. P.S. I do mean BORROW;)

Like Tman said, get the Bishop/Tardel book and read it everytime you're sitting on the thrown.

    Thanks Guys.

  22. I have read that book a 100 time or more and find myself referring to it once a week to see how they did something etc...............:)

Not to mention referencing a few key HAMB threads!

That's the same kit I picked up but I tosses the center thingy since I looks a bit streetroddy. This is all theoretical since I haven't put the front end back in again since I made up my mind.

HAHAHAHA! Have you seen my build? I'm no expert! Thanks for the compliment AND the laugh...

I will add, it's tough to picture things when you've just got a bunch of parts and not the whole package. Case in point, I had this odd-ball part that I asked a bunch of T guys about when I got my 26/27 roadster. No one knew what it was. Then, last night, while cleaning up I had the part in my hand and I realized what I was looking at, 7 months later. Ha ha ha. :D

I agree. Actually, Linh, my wife referred it to that "book you always freakin' read." Maybe she thinks I haven't finished it? :D

Or three....awesome.....:D Don't tell my girlfriend.

I do have "The Bible". It is in fact in my "Study" I do read it a lot. It's very informative. But I also am not trying to take is as the only way to get things done. Maybe that's my problem.

  29. Like I said, it can be a great reference. Also look at Brian B***' ch***is threads. Very refined use of old Ford parts in his work.
