Not even a drivers license, yet writes this book.
    He was an opportunist.
And ONLY the first chapter of the book was about the Corvair.
Chapter title: The sporty Corvair, the one car accident.
I have read the book, Cover to Cover.
He had some valid points in the opther chapters, but was dead wrong on the Corvair.
    My copy is autographed.........
He spoke at a Corvair convention in DC several years ago.

The Corvair, remains as the only vehicle ever "certified" as safe by the government.
Testing was ordered and in 1970 the SAE papers were published exhonerating the Corvair, long after GM ceased production.
    too little.......too late.
    Wasn't defending Nader.
    Not by any means.
Just pointing out, there were other reasons much more involved than a crackpot.

That's how I started out with Corvairs.
Back in 1975 I had a succession of them to use as winter cars in snowy NY.
Then finally picked one up that was too good to drive in the snow.
Now have 5 in my fleet.
    Fun cars.............

The photo is from retroatelier.com, a website from the Ukraine dedicated to a stylized replication of looks from the past. The photo on their site is here under "A Girl and a Car": http://www.retroatelier.com/en/image/?id=1016

Here is another photo from the same shoot.

There are more pinups here: http://www.retroatelier.com/en/album/pinup/portrait/

The photo is recent, the model is gorgeous, so the good news is she still looks that good!
The bad news is she's in the Ukraine.... road trip?

"I wonder how one of the Corvette Sebrings (or SS or whatever) got on the same trailer as a 289 Cobra?"

Pardon me if somebody has already responded to this.

The "289 Cobra" is probably an AC Bristol.

The Corvair I had in 66. It was the 140 hp with four carbs. I drag raced it mostly at Old Bridge Stadium in New Jersey. They had a drag strip on the main straight of a 1/2 mile oval. It was 1/16 mile. With the hard slicks they had back then NOTHING would stay with this car for the first 40 feet. It ran in K/S which consisted of mostly small V-8's with two barrels. In two years racing I only lost twice. Racing that car on that little track was a blast. In time trials I routinely beat inexperienced drivers in GTO's and actually beat an A/S 426 wedge Mopar one night. Get a good jump, they would blow the tires loose and it was all over. I ran the 1/4 miles too but wasn't as successful. The car really need a five speed.

    Whatever.
Writing books naming names and makng public speeches on the subject couldn't have had any affect on Corvair but it worked for getting rid of knockoffs, got it.

Thanks. If it wasn't for the women in the Ukraine there wouldn't be an internet.

On the right side, (engineers seat) the cord hanging down is the whistle, the brass handled lever hanging from the over head is the throttle, and the brass lever on the "tower" in front of the seat is the air brakes (if I remember right)

Thank you, swi66. I had four Corvairs and loved every one of them. I keep telling people that it was the Mustang which killed it, but they all think "Nader." The one I loved least was a 68 which had all the emissions stuff on it. They also cheapened it up a bit with cheaper seats. The one I loved best was a 65, and I later had one of those four-barrel manifolds on that one. Used to run around town looking for 327 Corvettes to take on at the next stoplight.

Incidentally, in Joey Chitwood's book, titled ironically, "Safe at any Speed," he recounts that their 1965 Corvair was the only car they were ever able to use for two complete show seasons for the ramp-to-ramp jump. Before and since, they changed cars each year.

About putting some weight in the trunk. A neat way was to make use of that fiberglass trunk lining. Pull the drain plug out, toss in a case or two of beer, then fill it up with ice, then head for the track. Of course, when the ice started melting you'd get people pulling up to tell you your radiator was leaking, which was a real hoot. I used to say it must be the windshield washer.

This has, no doubt, been posted here, but just in case it hasn't.....

This is what happens when you build a land speed record car in your backyard garage...things just kind of get out of hand....

  22. Most of the valves were for the site glasses and gauges and not normally operated but I'm sure there was still plenty to keep you busy. I dig the hell out of that picture.
