failing throw out bearing?

  1. i think thats the pilot bearing.. the throw out bearing is not moving when the clutch is pushed in as the disc and input shaft are at a stand still.. its when your clutch is out and the trans in neutral that the throw out bearing will squeal.

    The hole is plenty large enough to swap it out. To clarify my suggestion, the clutch has to be removed to check/replace the pilot bushing.

    It looks like you have the skill level to do the job without issues and it is pretty self explanatory once you get into it. I was worried about your mechanical skill level due to the questions you asked. That appears to be due to not being familiar with the clutch setup rather than not being familiar with the bottom side of a vehicle. We get a lot of guys who have absolutely no mechanical experience or skills on here who all the sudden go from driving an automatic trans front wheel drive late model that has always gone to the dealership for service to having a pre 60 model vehicle that they would like to work on themselves.

    The hardest thing about just changing the throwout bearing is the weight of that particular transmission. The weight makes it pretty awkward to handle for one guy if he doesn't have a jack to raise it on.

    Always a lot of very good help offered here. I have used a tap to remove pilot bushings. Just thread it in and when it bottoms on the crank it will push out the bronze bushing.

    That is incorrect that "the throw out bearing is not in use when you press in the clutch". The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel and is spinning when the engine is spinning. Therefore when you press the clutch in the throw out bearing is actually working, the pressure surface is pushed against the pressure plate and spinning and the back is held steady by the arm. It could still however be coming from the pilot bearing.

    Yep the throw out bearing spins when clutch pedal is pushed. Good catch "thotvet"
