    DuVall/Kurtis bumper truck.

DuVall also owned a really cool 28/29 roadster with a split windshield and padded top - but the pictures are gone from that thread.

  4. Larry Zilinsky on Vancouver Island sells them for the repo Duvall windshield. I think they are called the bop top. Lots of cars are using them now. Pat.

  5. In my opinion, the 'syling' of the screen does not suit a top, as when they are fitted,..........(taking a deap breath and using the imagination), if you can imagine one of the 'Cars' vehicles with their eyebrows pulled up.....

Some instalations can be made to 'work', but more often then not, the styling comprimises made in the interest of fitting a roof just look wrong, and out of proportion.

As an example of rods that have no roof, but have screens that are visually appealing, see below (yes, these are 'hallock style, not 'Duval' but the principal is the same).....sometimes you just have to be prepared to get wet;) :D

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

Here's Russ Daly's roadster. Not a Duvall or Hallock, but a homebuilt Vee windshield with a Carson style top. It looks pretty darn good, and in the second photo, you'll notice, it's raining...

I looked through a "street rod builder" mag at Barnes and Noble last night, and there happened to be a decent article in there about making a lift off top out of aluminum for a duval windshield. It did have a nice shape to it although it was skinned in aluminum. gave me a few ideas for mine, although i'm modifying a Fiat top frame to fit my duvall. Might want to take a look at it if you see one on the magazine rack.

Anyone know anything about those kidney bean mags on that '29? They look too dark to be magnesium... Are they painted perhaps?

Actually not that I'm any kind of expert but I just bought some NOS mag wheels that have never been poilshed or any thing and they are quite a bit darker than those. and totally brand new. But like I said I'm no expert.

There was a 1980's 32 Roadster based loosely on the Spencer car that had a steel top made from a 34 sedan roof(?). Had a sharp angle where the header formed over the split windshield frame IIRC...
Looked good to my eyes though!
Can't remember the owners name. I believe it was a dark red and then later painted black...

  15. That's the one I was going to mention, there's no overhang of the roof, it's flush with the edge of the w/s frame, steel/painted black with the center fade-away peak. It's a black Doane clone with the roof off. I don't have a pic either. It's about the only hardtop one that even closely looks right to me. The white conv. top on the E&J headlight one above looks good.

    Yeah! Thats the one!
I completely forgot how the windshield joint was done...just going on memory...but your right, there was no overhang at all.
I DO remember how the lines of the top looked right for the style of car.

Hmmmm....Did Doane's roadster have a metal top at any time I wonder?

Thanks for the pics guys, guess I just didnt look hard enough (I looked for about an hour and a half on various sites).

I'm not sure if I like the tops with the overhang. It looks like they got the car built for another windshield, then decided to add a duvall after the top was finished.

As long as it doesn't look like this, it'll be cool.

The wheels on Russ's car are not painted. Here's the view from the sunny side.

  22. My friend, Roger Ward's Taupe colored 32 Roadster has both and was featured in Rod&Custom about 12 years ago so I know its been done before...
His has a black Haartz canvas top..... these 2 pics are alll I can find of his car...I took these at Greasearama in KC a while back.
Surely someone on here has a front-on view of the car........

Yes, the Doane Spencer car had a hardtop, and a nice one. Look here for pictures (midway down the page):
    <http://www.so-calspeedshop.com/projectcars/myer/doanespencer.html>
Bear in mind that the Duvall on the Doane car was modified to straighten up the outside legs of the windshield frame; this would affect the shape of the top.

Seems to me that Steve Moal also built a Duvall-equipped roadster with a removable aluminum hardtop a few years ago.

The "Bop Top" is Sid Chavers' brand name for folding/stowable roadster tops, and they are available to fit Duvall windshields. His website may show them.

Hey there! We make an excellant hideaway soft top frame that fits stock style windshields, Duvals, and Dan Fink style, via a cast aluminum 2 piece windshield header. The header for each style comes apart and the entire frame will store easily behind the seat or in your trunk. This is NOT a "Bop Top"......the Bop Tops are made by Sid Shavers. Check us out at www.topsters.com or email to topsters@yahoo.com for info and pics.

Did you make your top frame? Does your front header latch or bolt to the duvall windshield? I'm trying to figure out a top on mine at present, I've got the frame but will have to make the front header bow to fit.

  29. I had a Vee windscreen with a convertable top on my trike - the key thing was to bring the leading edge of the roof ahead of the screen, sort of like a visor. I don't have any pictures of my car to hand but here are some other Avions. The visor/peak effect on my car was more pronounced because there was a moulded fibreglass form inside the mohair roof.

The dark red 32 roadster mentioned earlier was built by the late Dave Gale out of Columbus Ohio. The top was made from a steel 33 coupe top. Dave had a great eye and the top looked great. The car is in California now. Some idiot put a huge engine in it with funny car looking zoomies.
