So awhile back I was asking how to tap out a bolt for my alternator that snapped off in the block. Well I f*cked that up and now it needs to drill out the remaining bolt and rethread the hole... or do I? I was looking on the other side of the motor and I have the exact same holes over there that have nothing in them. I guess an A/C compressor would have gone there? The motor is a 260 v8 and when I was looking at some pictures of other fairlanes like mine, the alternator/ generator was on the pass side not the drivers side like mine. Can I take the alternator and simply move it to the other side of the motor? Will this cause any other issues, besides maybe needing to move/ extend some wires? Thanks
i dont think the alternator would care, if you have the right brackets i would give it a try. and the next time you snap a bolt off i would try this trick, take a piece of 1/8" by 1" flatbar 6 or 8 inches long, drill a hole near one end just under the bolt size and weld it to the broken bolt, alot easier then tring to weld a nut on and you end up with a handle allready, drilling and taping is a last resort.
thanks, I will give the new bracket a try before I pay someone to tap out the existing location... it will be cheaper I bet.
Why can't you take a punch and center punch the broken bolt, take a 1/8" high quality drill bit to make a pilot hole for a larger bit, open the damaged hole up enough to use the proper size extractor, PB blaster the bolt and extract it?
I tried that first and in doing so I screwed up the threads on the original hole. The bolt was broken just under I would say a 1/4" inside the hole.
Blow the broken bolt out with a cutting torch. It wont hurt the cast iron. Run a tap through the hole and your back in business.
To get back to your exact ? about where can it be. Any place you want it. It can even be mounted backwards, yes turn the other direction if you like, it don't care. It just has to turn.
So the bracket I have currently for the drivers side of the motor will not work if I reverse it to the pass side?
I think you missed my point. Your just moving it to the otherside and that will work. It still spins the same way. What I was saying about backwards is that the alternater can also be turned 180* (that would put the pulley to the back) and still work. Hope this clears things up for you.
