Here is a bit better photo of the hubcap.

This might be a combination from the Calvenar Cromesides and the Whrome disk. Perhaps the Moon Disk comes from another brand...

Here is a Calvenar Chrome side with the Ripple Disk Flipper hubcap on another car. Of co**** Gil's Ford did not have the flipper bar center section.

chrisman send me this photo of a set he is going to use on his car.

The one on the left is the Chromeside and the one on the right is the same but then with a Stock Ford hubcap added. I think the ripple disk (single bar) hubcap mount over the ridge in the center.

No... the 49 Merc caps had large Mercury Eight script on them, the 1950 model is plain, but much more dog dish shaped. By far not as round (moon shaped) as the unit shown on Gil's Ford.

Here we go,had some help today(keep him off the streets),his name is Gus,he has helped before, his small hands come in handy installing the hinges.I have been off work this week,so i made some progress.First thing on the list was to fit the front end to the car so i could make sure it all lines up.The '47 hood is wide compared to the '42 hoods,so i had to slice my hood and eliminate the center crown, once i did this the hood came together nicely just like the Ayala car.I just tacked it together with my mig, will finish it up once the grille opening is done.

So now with the hood steady and the grille widened, i tackled the grille cavity.A lot time went into looking at the pictures of the original '42 ford custom that Gil Ayala built. It got to a point where i was seeing folds, crowns, etc that did not exist(to many hours working on it that day).So i emailed RIKSTER for his input, with pictures he supplied,i got my answer.
So here are the pics of the ordeal.I believe i nailed it.All welds have not been dressed, and i still need to weld up the hood and weld some on the splash apron, and some other details.I'm stoked!Hope you guys like it to.

Looking very good David. All the lines are there. Its not easy recreating some in 3D when you only have 2D photos to work with.
Great job so far... Looking forward to see it all in one color primer.

    Thanks for the update!

As for the hub caps, I think they are one-piece dish caps. It can be hard to tell from old photos, but they look more like those on Ralph Jilek's '40 than a separate ring and cap.

Not a complete match, the one on Ayala's '42 appears to be a deeper dish. Or, as usual, I may be completely wrong... :)

  17. Cool build thread, can't wait to see this one as it progresses.

    Chrisman,

I think you are right and the hubcaps needed are one piece hubcaps. I now see them used on more early customs. But I think the once used on the Ralph Jilek 1940 Ford you use as a sample are slightly different. Those hubcaps are as far as I know George DuVall units. Similar to the one below.

On all the cars I have found so far using the correct hubcaps the feature article do not list the hubcaps at all. My guess is an late 1940's early 1950's aftermarket unit.

Its been awhile since i posted info on the Ayala tribute project. i have been working on details.Been talking to Memo Ortega,he bought the original car from Gil in '58,regarding details like the cowl vent(was it filled?).Memo mentioned it was filled,so off with the vent this weekend. I was considering running appletons, and had the a pillars drilled!reconsidered and decided to stay true to the original and go spotless! So i welded the holes up.A couple of pics on that. Finally located a original set of '41 Ford skirts ,in Canada. Will paint the firewall this week(dark midnight blue)the original color.then reinstall the engine, then install amd weld the front sheetmetal, then cut the driveshaft,then.....well you get the picture.

That would be awesome Dave ! I cant afford to buy a a set of originals, and I think I can make the flush ones fit better than making a set that overlaps, I think with the curve on the fender it would be difficult to get a nice fit like the factory ones have , so flush fit it is! What the hell is another few days of metal work anyways eh!

I don't know how you Canadians do it but every hot rod I've ever seen built in Canada is exceptional!
