Not the Felson books, but the hard cover pictoral books of late 60's early 70's drag racing, dirt bikes, hot rods..etc. I spent a lot of time looking at those in 6th,7th,8th grade.

Anybody remember the ***les, and can you post any pics?

    Thx

I don't have pictures to post, but I do remember the ones you are talking about. Even better, even though our school library was brand new in the early seventies, we had a whole bunch of the books Tex Smith published in the early sixties. One was called "How to build a hot rod", and I think I had it on just about permanent loan all through grade school. I don't think I have ever seen any of those ***les out side of school libraries now that I think of it.

Funny, after I just wrote that, I just remembered I was thinking about an image in one of those books the other night. I think it was in the one on dirt bikes, and there was a picture of a young kid and a mini bike, with two cops and a cop car behind the three of them. If you look at the picture closely, the kid has a fairly determined look on his face, and his hand on the pull start for the mini. Kinda like thinking "this might just get me away from these guys"! That might have been the same one that a couple of pages on the dog that rode scrambles with his owner on a Husqvarna too...

  4. HOT ROD and AMT had at least one Model book. I may have forgot about it and it theoretically may still be in my bookcase..................

My school library had this cool little hardcover about Ed Roth, pics of the Mysterion, and a '55 that he had spring to mind...

I remember checking out a hard cover book from my Jr. High library called "King of the Dragsters" written by the swamp rat daddy himself, Don Garlits. I think it was first published in '67....

  19. At my school we had a copy of "building and racing the Hot Rod", a paperback novel sized book. I read it about 600 times, then I heard that they were getting rid of the "old" books (this was in the late 60's). So I had 2 options - watch it get sold to a book dealer - or swipe it. I chose number 2, and I still have it.

Oh ****, tons of memories! prost34, that Car customizing book is one of the ones I was trying to remember last night as I posted. I think that's the one with the kid that customized his mom's '56 Olds with his moms help! I remember she was referred to as "Lady legal owner", a term I now use for my girlfriends small fleet of interesting vehicles... And the "here is your Hobby" series - they had them on go karts and slot cars, that I remember! Tex Smith's Go Kart book, had that one all grade school too! Damn, I need to watch used book sales a bit closer. No wonder I ****ed so badly at school - they had all my subversive **** right in the library! I mean, why study English when I could already speak and somewhat spell, when I could be reading about cool stuff - right?

I remember one from my elementary school (mid '80's) library called, I think "Lowrider Mania". It was full of cool stuff (at least I thought so at the time). I guess I'd have to flip through it again to give an accurate ***essment now.

    Are these the books?

I remember them at school in New Zealand when I was a 10 year old in 1974. They were 1st published in the USA in 1967. I can tell you, as a kid in NZ, these books had a huge impact on my desire to be a Hot Rodder.

As luck would have it I scored the pictured Drag Racing book and still have it today. I was a library monitor in 1976 and the librarian discarded the book as some delightful child had scratched the plastic cover with their finger nails - you can see the marks in the images... But the actual hard cover is still perfect if I peel the plastic cover off - which I won't...

    Thanks for the memories!
