  23. Skirts? Yup, little grass skirts. . . :)

Seriously, they look like shields of sorts, used to keep mud, water or other debris from flying up too high onto the car or on close-by objects. They appear to be attached to the wheel hubs.

The car on left also appears to have something similar attached. I've not seen them before.

By gum, now THIS join was jumpin' !!! Photo posted on flickr by member shiphome (popuar Don Blankenship). Can we analyze where and when this pic was taken? Note the gravity gas pump. And the tubes in the windows don't seem black, so maybe the old RED ones (?). Can't tell what the sign at left says. (THANKS to Twin6; he got me to poking around over on flickr at 6 this morning.)

Even most of 1941 was still “pre war” here in the States. I think it’s about attitudes.

That being said, I’m fairly certain that’s a later-war photo. The U.S. markings with the bars aren’t correct to the ‘39-‘41 period. They should be a white star in a circle with a red ball in the middle.

A shark mouth like that in the period would be wearing RAF roundels or Chinese AF stars anyway.
