Is this Duesenberg a survivor?

 

Isn't that Joey Brown behind the wheel of his Duesenberg #444? If so the car later went to Howard Hughes and was later restored in Connecticut by the McGowen Brothers, then sold to Otis Chandler in LA. It is one of the nicest Model J Duesenbergs ever, Black on black with BLACKWALL tires, Chandler put WWW on it and downgraded the look I think. Who owns it now in unknown to me.

 

Re 5707 - Are the passengers wearing US Navy uniforms - Brown had a son who died serving with the Navy in WWII - he was a flyer, I think

 

J-444/2456 was delivered w/ white walls and wheel disks...Did cheapen up the look.

 

37Kid, jeez, you have a good eye! Yes, that's Joe E. Brown, the movie comedian. The car was EXACTLY like Gary Coopers' '31 (presumably the car raced against Groucho's mercedes?).

After Chandler (LA Times publisher), I understand the current owner of Joe E. Brown's Duesy is someone named McMullen.

 

Twin, I thought these Joe E. Brown pix seemed relevant
to the Duesenberg Tourster. Let me know if these pix are

Joe E. brown had two sons, Don and Joe. I don't know for sure
which this is in dad's grip (maybe Joe). Don was killed in '41
in air training exercise. Joe E. kept his sanity by continuing
to entertain the troops every chance he got. Photo is THANKS

So which of Joe E. Brown's sons might this have been, sitting
beside his dad in the Duesy? I'm thinking Don who died in a
1941 air training exercise. BTW, I just read that John McMullen
offered the car for sale in 2007 through RM Auctions for a
projected $1.2- to 1.5-million. Pretty sure it a was a no-reserve
auction, so I don't know if it met expectations NOT whether it
is in new hand yet again! One of just eight Derham Toursters,
THE CAR ITSELF IS A CELBRITY!!!

Check the tire pump on this car loaded with young ladies. Looks like opposed cylinders, with a rotary action. I've seen some old pumps with one cylinder and a long handle that gets pumped back and forth through maybe a 50 degree arc, but this one is downright modern by comparison.

 

The car is nothing special, but those roofs are...

I read a book written by a surviving Flying Tiger pilot a few years ago.He talked about flying,Joe E. Brown, in the small area behind the pilot in a P-40.This was done so Brown could get to remote bases in the CBI, China Burma India,and give the guys entertainment.It was said Brown would go anywhere he could get just to give the troops a laugh.The big guys,Hope,Crosby and others would hit the larger safer bases but the poor guys out in the boonies,the Aleutians and other out of the way places seldom got the shows.God Bless guys like Joe E. Brown,the world could use a few more like him.

Yeah, it's just 'shocking' isn't it? Just think though, of the cars those boys flying them early forts left back home parked in the barn or woodshed! A 'deuce here, a flivver there, and some may have even had a more exotic ride that was idled while they were away defending our America! And then when they got home? Well some of us can thank 'em for having kids - US!

More Joe E. Brown Duesenberg #444 history. When Howard Hughes owned the car the body was removed and it spent time during WWII test towing gliders, so the aircraft photos are very much in keeping with this thread.
