Good deal for $200! The 4BT cummmins is a good idea. Those are good little motors, and there are turbo versions out there.
Here is something that might help you stay motivated. I Photoshopped this van for a guy a few months ago. Its pretty similar to yours. If you really want flames let me know and I'll see what I can do.:D

It's a different kind of truck to be sure but if you want
some ideas of what can be done - and with a 4BT
Cummins as well, check out this anazing build :

I've been following it since the beginning and it's absolutely
first class.A lot of the stuff he's done to his 1 1/2 ton '47
Ford straight truck would also be applicable your your old
    '55 Chevy 'bread van'! :)

I've considered buying an old stepvan of some sort, I have this image fixed in my head of driving around in one lettered in some fake third-world utility company out of an episode of Mission:Impossible.

Yep, Photoshop. I got the image off a new Ford F-350 Dually, I believe they are a factory option.

LMAO! You got it! It could be called "Mother in Law"!

  8. Looks like "Cars" meets some bad zombie movie.

I don't think a turbo 6.2 is going to make 28 MPG in anything except maybe an S10. I'd lean towards a 4BT or a Dodge/Cummins 5.9. The 4BT I believe can be adapted to most any trans with existing parts, just depends what delivery truck it comes out of.

I know where I've seen that truck. It's the get-away truck for the "Mission Impossible" crew used at the end of each episode from the orginal TV series. Must have 100 coats of Hollywood paint on it

  13. nope was a parisian bread truck.. got the electrics sorted out, brakes.. now just need to flush the fuel system.. and away we go

wow... i drove one of those, delivering bread for 25 years before i retired.. a good find for $200.00.. and a whole lot of posibilities there

  15. Find a 94 to early 98 dodge 1 ton and drop it on that chassis and enjoy the hell out of it while having plenty of hp and torque, oh yeh and enjoying 15+mpg! in something that big forget the gas motor unless you got very deep pockets.

  16. lets know how the trip went tomorrow night

  23. CrazyD converted one for a camper/Harley hauler. Had a generator and rear ramp. Kinda sucked on the highway in the wind. 4wd would make a fun desert wagon tho

Must not have made it back yet. I don't think it should take a month to get across CA to AZ, even in an old bread truck.

Hey buddy, YOU may have got it for 200...which is a good price...BUT, that thing is a BITCH to sand down...ask me how I know? :(
I was on top of one of those things in 1970...sanding the hell out of it for Bebricks Paint and Body shop in Austin TX as a teenager .....Took a long ass time even with an airsander!!:p

Wife here says it would make a good truck to sell CUPCAKES out of in NYC!!! If you do that you make your money back....LOL.

  28. lol cupcakes well hell i figure i should say hey im back.. the oil pressure dropped off and it started rod knocking. had to store it in blythe for a week and come back and flat tow it back with a 26' box truck through that day flagstaff had tornados. was going to throw some new rod bearings and an oil pump at it but am working on getting a 65 c10 with a 327 and 4 speed, going to get the 327 running see how it goes but more than likely i will do a rebuild on the engine while its out.
