This Mercedes I believe is higher horsepower than the red one. Can anyone tell us the histories of these two cars as they are surely known. Could the red one possibly be the Collins car ??

Cannon who raced this car was from Hartford Conn. where the Columbia was manufactured as part of Popes empire. This photo is much better than the earlier one I posted.

    http://www.emercedesbenz.com/autos/...rts/mercedes-benz-history-the-mercedes-35-hp/

    Exerpts from link:
"The first modern car was designed by Wilhelm Maybach, chief designer of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, in 1900. The state-of-the-art 1000-kilogram car with a characteristic low centre of gravity was made for Emil Jellinek, as the first vehicle to bear the “Mercedes” name. .............................."

".......... Jellinek finally convinced Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach to build him a powerful car. The new DMG vehicle was to enter the Nice races under the name of “Mercedes”. Jellinek and his team had entered races under this pseudonym since 1899. Even then, he realised that, as well as being powerful advertising tools for their manufacturer, high-performance sports cars also provided a foretaste of series-production cars of the future: “I want the car of tomorrow!”, he told the DMG engineers. He placed a bulk order for 36 cars for a total price of 550,000 Mark. .........."

There was a Julian Brown drove a Chalmers-Detroit 40 in the 4th July - 1908 Wildwood, NJ. 1 mile street sprint, he finished 3 rd in the free for all behind Willie Haupt in a Chadwick and Paul Schill in a Fiat.
