Projects New 38 chevy project truck.

Hey All:

Started working on my 38 chevy truck project, doing the frame from scratch, starting the build from the rearend forward.

still have to work out some of details, but really enjoying the work.

 

Nice looking frame back half, what are you planning for a power plant?

Picked up a SBC 350 been working on it but at a very slow pace.

Have not decided on a transmission as of yet, thinking about a T-56 6-speed but not sure, any reccomendations?

Turbo350. There is not a lot of room for a clutch in that cab.Tom (Tired Old Man)

 

I did a mock of the bed, Thinking about going with 60" bed, will decide after the frame is done.

Going with a Ford Nine Inch rearend, found one from a Lincolin Mark V with rear disc brakes. Do not like the 2.75 gear ratio, so ordered a 3.89 Ratio Posi unit from an E-bay builder, came in with 31 spilne needed 28 spline so shipped it back...funny it was shipped to be in a 5 Gal bucket so built a wooden crate to ship it back in. Hope to get it back in a few weeks.

Installed a Hard Pan bar on the rearend (See PIC), was thinking about doing a Watts Link but decided to go with the Hard Pan bar for now, if the rest of the project goes well will come back to it.

 

what are you doing for grill?

 

Not sure don't have a Grill yet, thinking about picking up a stock 1938 Grill/shell, have seen one with a 34 chevy grill and I like the looks of that grill.

 

I have a 37 Chevy and a 38 GMC that I am collecting parts for future builds. I am planning on cutting the beds down as you have, but I am also thinking about raising the bed up so that it sits at the body line. I think that this would help the looks of the bed greatly.

Here is our Speedway 34 chevy car grill shell in our 38 Chevy truck.Still have not found something to put in it as the insert for the shell is VERY costly. Tom (Tired Old Man)

 

IMHO,you squashed the top too much, it's out of proportion.

 

I have thought about setting the bed even with the body line also but think I will need to add somthing to the lower bed side so as not to show the frame.

 

I really like the look of that grill!
Going to be a very cool project.

Looking good, so how long before she is road worthy?

 

I like the lower over all profile, when I am done it will ride about 5" to 6" off the ground.

I have done more "traditional" projects, my 1969 Chevy Camaro was one of my favorites, it got totaled when I was hit by a drunk driver.
On this porject I am going for a long low silhouette.

Just finidhed working on the front rails of my frame, tapered the 4" tube down to to 2", I like the the wat they turned out, sure took some work to get them straight.

Now working on building the front end parts,I purchased some Mustang II plans but after doing some drawings decided to make major changes, will post photos later.

Did purchase upper and lower A arms decided not to build them myself.

 

Great project! I also picked up a 38 Truck in November. I have been challenged with so many possible ch***is builds that My head hurts (too many options these days). I will be getting an original bent three inch dropped front axle tomorrow. I'm thinking of traditional meets modern hot rod.

 

Sorry I have not done a update in a while been very busy.
Pickup a 1935 Chevy Truck grill for the project like the way they look and decided to get it found it is a little long for my front end so will have to chop it down 4".
Got my motor and trans bolted into the frame , will send photos of the motor mounts I built later.

On a side note Thought my son would like to get involved but as of yet no luck, just not his bag I guess, how ever the daughter boy friend wants to hang out in my garrage to the point the daughter get mad at him for wanting to spend more time with me than her.

Got the Motor mounts tacked together and bolted up, now need to weld them out, grind and clean them up.

Might be a little on the heavy duty side but didn't want to take any chances.

 

Im digging it. Anxious to see how it turns out!

 

Added the shock mounts I like the way they turned out.

 

Through some old wheels on the frame and rolled it out of the garage inorder to wash the floor.

 

Have not posted in a while still been working on my truck but it has been very hot so not much progress.

I purchased some seats out of a honda that are nice however when I got them in the cab I didn't like them, not as much room as I thought I would have, been thinking about trying some "Bomber" seats, but was wondering just how confortable they are?

Been working on the project for one full year, looks like it will take one more year before it is drivable and two more years before it is even close to being done.
