History Vintage "Cageless" Midget Picture Thread

  1. I'm with you. Wings, cockpit sides, roll cage side panels and ugly front bodywork outa' go away. Driver safety items like cage, arm restraints, good seats, etc. need to stay.

    Well said, Denny!

    I agree with every word that you wrote.

  3. Not sure if this has been posted before. Racer Mel Anthony, from Seattle, back at it. Also some cool archival footage.

    Actually two of the pictures are mine. King next to the Vitucci car at Old bridge and King standing behind the O'hara checkerboard at Williams grove., but who cares at this point.

    They were pinched off the Vintage Racer site EMMR's.

    Sorry Jim,
    Didn't mean to pilfer your pic. King next to the Vitucci 10. I should have just posted the link. Apologies.

    Actually not a problem Mike. If I wanted them locked up, I wouldn't have put them there. I just don't want anybody but EMMR making money off them.

    I have had ESPN use my pictures for a book, which credits EMMR.

    Jim ..

    If I accidentally posted any of your pictures without your permission &/or without giving you proper credit I apologize. We did so innocently, as we just didn't know it was yours.

    All we're trying to do is document (as much as we can) some of King Carpenter's racing history for his daughter .... together with reviewing here some of the past of the sport we've all loved and enjoyed over the years.

    Again, if we were in error, I & we apologize.

    Guys, no harm no foul. As I stated, I put them with EMMR so they can be enjoyed. I just don't want people making money off of them. I give whatever $/credit to EMMR, a great organization!

    Do you live in the New York - New Jersey – Connecticut - Pennsylvania – Ohio area?
    What are you doing on Sunday, November 14th?
    Do you know where Hazleton, Pa is?
    Surely you have heard of or know Stan Lobitz.

    Sunday, November 14th, the 25th Annual Lobitz Movie Party, Auction & Dinner will be held at the Lobitz Catering Hall, at 1090 State Route 940 (Fishers Hill), Hazleton, Pa. 18202
    Being the 25th Annual event that Stan Lobitz has held, it promises to be very special.

    Things get started fairly early in the day (about 9:00 AM) and continue all day long. There is lunch during the day. It all winds up with a sit down dinner that starts at approximately 5:00 PM.

    There will be an auction that benefits the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) .... http://www.emmr.org There is usually a lot of humorous brief roasting of people type activity and other well intentioned fun that goes on during the EMMR auction.

    It goes without saying that “bench racing” abounds during the entire day.

    The American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) .... http://www.ardcmidgets.com .... holds a meeting and election of officers at the hall, during the day .. after which most of the members present join in the festivities.

    One never knows just who might show up, as far as racing folks go.
    Names from the past like the 90 year old Chris Economacki of the National Speed Sport News and TV announcing fame, outstanding midget, sprint, modified, champ & Indy car owner Ken Brenn, Marty Himes of the Himes Museum of Auto Racing Nostalgia, drivers like modified (one of the Eastern Bandits) , sprint car & Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Denny Zimmerman, modified, midget, sprint & champ car driver Leigh Earnshaw, Hank Rogers, Jr. , modified, midget and sprint car great Johnny Mann, sprint car ace Lynn Paxton of the EMMR, midget & sprint car stand out Jimmy Maguire, TQ & midget charger Billy Courtwright, noted midget, sprint , super modified & champ car owner Skip Matzak, and a host of others are expected.

    There usually has been a few rare, special &/or vintage race cars on display just outside the catering hall.
    Eddie Sachs, Jr., son of the late, great midget, sprint & Indy car star, is expected to bring a few modern day Silver Crown (champ) cars for display.

    Lots of vendors in the house, too.

    There will be old Indy 500 and other racing movies shown during the day.

    Arlen Kurtis informed Stan that he and his lovely wife would be in attendance.”
    Arlen Kurtis is the son of famed Kurtis Kraft race car builder Frank Kurtis. .... (Attached is a picture of a vintage Kurtis Kraft midget.)

    Probably the one who will travel the furthest to attend this very special extravaganza will be a noted racer from the land down under (Australia) John Loxton.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Directions are as follows ...
    The Lobitz Catering Hall is on State Route 940, just north of where 940 branches off from Route 309, when coming north on Route 309.
    If you use MapQuest &/or Google Maps, be sure it directs you to the State Route 940 (Fishers Hill) location and not the old address.
    The catering hall is near the Church Hill Mall and a Chevy dealership.
    This quote is directly from Stan .... The directions coming in from the south ....
    "Take 100 to 309 and 309 to 940. - We are in back of the Church Hill Mall. - 1090 State Route 940. Hazleton, Pa. 18202"
    ”If you come down State Route 940 from the north, Lobitz Catering Hall would be on the right side 1/4 or so mile before 940 ends at Router 309.”
    ”If you come down 309 from the north,I would turn left at West 28th Street and make a right onto 940 and watch for Lobitz Catering Hall on the right.”
    The address again is .... 1090 State Route 940. Hazleton, Pa. 18202 (not Route 309)
    If State Route 940 doesn’t work in your GPS, try 1090 Fishers Hill, Hazleton, Pa 18202 instead.
    One person who went last year mentioned that .... “ it’s right between the Mall and the Chevy dealer. You could go into the Mall parking lot, make a left onto Fisher Hill out of the lot on the other side and Lobitz’s would be on the left side, a couple hundred feet.”
    Should you still get lost that day, the phone number of the Lobitz Catering Hall is .... 1-570-455-2037
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I HOPE TO SEE ‘YA THERE!!!!!!!

    Don't know if this is what you are looking for, it shows one of Harry Hull's motor mounts, beautifully cut out of 1/4' aluminum, before all that new cnc stuff. He attached them to the rail frame with clevis bolts.

    Thanks, thats exactly what i wanted to see! It's kinda what i was thinking of doing, it's like the front & mid plates on some of the dragsters I've had ,but thought they would be too modern looking for a '40's midget restoration.

    Hugh,
    Harry Hull never used any of those intakes that had Hull cast into them. The one on your photo was never even drilled for the carb studs. He also used Barker drive twin WICO mags on his twin fire 60 engines.
    I got my info from George Landry who drove and hung around with Harry.
    There were a few of those manifolds floating around Conn. a few years back

    Hi Stan, I know that only because at one point I had a bunch of them, and none were drilled out. They were pretty neat items, and got to trade them for other rare stuff I couldn't find. The last one traded away actually sold later on for around $750. Still have another totally different unfinished casting, Sorry, can"t get picture to post.

    If you want it to look older, you can also make the same thing out of tubing, and hang the engine in the same fashion on tabs...there's photos around of Pappy Hough's midgets set up like that.

    the heads shown on the engine have no visable name on them? who made those heads, I only ask this because my uncle ran finned aluminum "no name" heads on his v8-60 & I was always wondering who made them?

    I need some info guys, I purchased an early midget (rail frame) it came as a roller with a complete '37 v8-60 to rebuild & a stock v8-60 trans. the rear in the car is a model A with mechanical brakes. what I am missing is the torque tube. can you guys tell me if the V8-60 had it's own torque tube or will any ford torque tube bolt up to it and the model A rear. another hamber believes the trans to t-tube end is the same as later but thinks the model A rear flange is different then the later ford rears? since I don't have one of each to try I have to ask for guidance from you guys!

    Halibrand midget QC rears were Model A based so I'm fairly certain a standard midget torque tube will work. Our old Hamburger-Chevy II was built in 1946 and had a Tomsche internal gear change box at the firewall connected to a Tomsche aluminum center section via. a steel torque tube. When we broke the aluminum center section in 1973 we replaced it with a standard cast iron Model A center with side covers. Strangely, the u-joint was a 1936 Chevy piece. The old timers were very resourceful & knew their junkyard parts.

    Local legend Ray Richards was reputed to have built his first midget for $25 [1936] and won it all back the first night he raced it.

    Gregg Kishline happen to drive by the house Harry Turner once lived in recently. A bunch of guys were in the garage working on motorcycles so he went over and told them of the place's history. Several championship winning cars were built there. One of the bikers said "Well that explains the numbers on the wall." Sure enough, on the garage wall here a long list of famous racers' phone numbers from back in the early 1950s. Hopefully Gregg will be able to recover that section of drywall for posterity's sake.
