im building a 67 nova gasser and cant decide on a muncie 4spd or a th350 ..if i could find a cheap clutch turbo id be really stoked..im gonna be beating it at the track and driving it alotand i drive hard alot!!! and want reliability of an auto but want the fun of a stick..what do you guys think?.clutch turbos are pricey!!!!!!!

will an M22 really handle all i can throw at it or will a couple side steps lay it to rest

im trying to stay period correct for the most part around the late 60s

its really getting to me on what to run!!!!!ahhh:mad: :) ive looked at it from all angles i love muncies but dont want to grenade em left and right im broke lol so it makes me think auto

    thanks cb

Muncies are getting harder to find......I would build what is cheap. That's what is traditional.

CB, The 4 speed if you have the money and time to play with would be perfect but the auto is cheap to get started with. I wish I had a 4 speed in mine but I have run the hell out it with a C-4 auto. I have also seen alot of things go wrong running a stick and finding the weak links in the rest of the driveline.

I have owned a couple of street driven cars with that much stall, or more, and it wasn't a big deal. Just be sure you have an adequate cooler, and you will be ok.

There is a guy building what is called "super muncies" They are aftermarket cases, steel midplates and M22 gearsets. All new for around 1600.00. My friend has one in a chevelle and he is putting out over 1,000 HP on nitrous out of a 512.

(no, thats not a typo, I really did say over one thousand horsepower!)

He is packing the front tires off the line no problem and the tranny is holding up beautifully. He hasn't sprayed it on the track yet, so putting out just a tad under 800 HP all motor.

I think a super M22 is a down the road purchase but would be AWESOME

Lorodz do you really wish you went w/ an auto..I may just put clutches and a stall in my th350

I really don't want to worry about hard launches but don't want to be HASSLED for an auto in a traditional gasser

A new M22 is a big purchase I don't know if its in the cards right now but it might be worth it in the long run as far as not jumping from different setups to get a solid driveline

The auto trans is probably the smart way to go but the 4 speed sure is cool! There's also no doubt that a four speed would be more fun to drive.
I've run converters that stalled anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 rpm in my drag car and I was surprised to find that they feel pretty normal when I'm driving around in the pits. I'd think that a 3,000 stall would work fine on the street.

A clutch car really puts a lot more stain on the drivetrain. A auto with a nice converter will be more consistent.

I really agree with that statement!
Sometimes you've got to forget about "period correct" and go with what's practical.

These post are really helping the auto slide its way in the car..they handle a lot and I have one so that helps too I also don't need all the linkage to go with a muncie

Yes, automatics are easier on the drivetrain , but I love my 4 speed . That`s all I`ve ever raced . And it sure is FUN. Gasserman

There's an awful lot of stick shift guys in OH. Are you allowed to drag with and auto there?:D

We went to a race this year in OH and there were two clubs there stick only. One was a Mustang group and one was regular drag door cars, all stick racers. They must have had 100 cars between the two clubs. Grat action on the track.

Clutch-Glide! Two speeds, fast and faster, still gives you 3 pedals and no missed shifts.
