best way to laod 5000 lbs car on trailer

Ive chocked and locked my trailer brakes, and pulled the dead car on the trailer with my tow vehicle.

 

Go to ypur local Tractor Supply store and buy (2) 10,000lb ratchet straps. They have a ratchet and a 27 foot strap. They cost about $30 each. Attach one end to the frame of the car, the other to the front of the trailer, tighten til you can't anymore. Attach the 2nd strap to the frame and attach to the front of trailer, tighten till you can't anymore. release the first and reset, tighten till you can't can't anymore. release the 2nd strap,.................. It is not the easiest way to load a non-running vehicle and it will take a while but it is cheap, versitile way of loading almost anything that moves. once loaded, use the straps to secure the vehicle.

I loaded a 8200 truck like this with flat tire with this method. bring a friend with strong arms, it helps.

jack knife the trailer.......use a second vehicle to pull it up the trailer.....

and I would use a pulling strap....but if you have only a chain or use a come a long....use a heavy blanket on the chain or cable to protect your self in case it breaks

We did a caravan move of four cars using this method. Four trucks & trailers to move four cars across two states. When we got there, NONE of the four cars would run, so ............................. you improvise. I've used this method twice since then.

 

Really two pages of "use a come along" two pages of how to load a car next it will be "how do I get the wheels off my car" sorry for being a dick but this is lame!

This works good.

 

I pick up non running 60's cadillacs by myself all the time.

At least one heavy duty come-a-long (pick up at Harbor Freight), some blocks for the wheels (so it doesn't roll off), air tank for the tires or spare wheels. couple lengths of 2x12 for ease of loading/rolling and some heavy chains. Last got a 61 limo, sitting in 3" of water and gravel with 2 flats up onto the trailer in about an hour...

 

when i bought my 45 gmc all the wheels were stuck and had flat tires, we pulled the truck out into the guys yard with his tractor, i backed my trailer up infront of the truck. i unhooked my truck, blocked up the back end of the trailer, hooked a long chain from the trailer to a tree behind the gmc, then pulled the truck onto my trailer with the guys tractor, took no time at all, slick as cows shit, now i have a hand crank winch mounted to the front of my trailer and i carry a 12v boat winch with when i go, i extanded the controls for the boat winch so i can sit in the vehicle and steer as it is being pulled.

 

You are on the right track JONNY,----Back the trailer to a small berm & use the nose jack for final rear loading area adjustment (up or down).
Like everyone says---use a 5000 lb rated come along to slowly pull it onto trailer, pull it far enough forward to create 250 lbs tongue weight at the ball. Once in position, use chain binders to secure the car for sudden stops & rear movement.

I bet DEUCE had a pair of "forks" under that bucket while scooting the 2dr.

Thats why you build a trailer for the heaviest load you plan on towing.
Any 2X4X120 wall mainframe tandem axle will haul any Lincoln out there.
One BIG mistake guys usually make is: Installing too small of axle(s) capacity, remember, take TOTAL weight of trailer from rated axle(s), a trailer weighing 2000 lbs. using 2 3500 lb axles, leaves 5000 lb payload, & if the big Lincoln weighs 5000 lbs.----You know what is going to give way when you hit the first BIG BUMP??---BOTH axles will suddenly be bowed in a downward fashion, resulting in 4 wheels & tires in negative camber.
All this to say, start with lots of BUILT IN axle capacity!-----Don (Retired trailer mfg.)

 

My "heavy duty" harbor freight come-a-long exactly for this purpose pulled one empty truck about 10 feet and the cable got jambed beside the wheel. If you must use one, keep that in mind.

The 18' trailer that I share with my Dad has a hand-crank winch mounted on the front, like one you might use for a boat with a very long lead and it's seen alot of car hauling duty. It will get the job done but you get a huge forearm workout.

Don't forget to bring something to block the rear tires, if you're rigging this thing up with come-a-longs or whatever, it never fails that you will be 1/2 on the trailer and need to reposition.

Being a dick is a hard job but someone has to do it. Also turn off caps lock and you did not have to read it if you diddnt want to.

I have a pulled a few 63 Cad Limo's around. Don't tell the local trailer rental place though. They thought I was pulling a Dune Buggy...

 

If you are using YOUR trailer, invest in a top-quality ELECTRIC winch and never worry about it again! Come-alongs are the most dangerous POS "tool" there is out there, they suck ass, and it takes forever to load with one. I've seen two literally explode apart under load. I'll never touch another one, EVER.

The jackknifed trailer idea is good in a pinch.

Buy a winch. Be done with it. Never worry about picking up another car again. Too easy.

Equipment trailers are tall an that car is low........ Better bring some 2x6s and a comealong.

 

Always did the come a long thing. Hauled many of them out, even with four flats.
I take two come a longs and a long chain. Load bind the car down once its loaded and use the come a longs as extra security. Make sure you pull from the center or it will drag the car on sideways if you dont watch it.

 

To the guy with the big letters above;with all that pent up anger you could probably throw the fuckin Lincoln on the trailer.

 

How to do it... NOT... my neighbor had a semi-deceased Dodge van that he needed to get loaded. He rented a trailer and put the rig down hill about 100 feet at the dip in our street. Before he started to roll out of his drive way, I asked him to check the steering, key / lock and brakes. He said no problems. Guess what? As soon as he made the 90 out of his driveway, that van took off like shot from the port bow catapult. It did a small (but loud) wheelie after hitting the trailer's ramps and flying up in the air a few inches. It stopped only after impailing the front x-member on the other end of the trailer. Luckily, it didn't get off the front of the trailer and into his pickup's tail gate. It took us 2 hours to shore it up and pull it back down on all four wheels. If there ever was a day I needed a video camera. Luckily he didn't see how hard I was laughing after he stopped. He was kinda pale when he first got out, too. Expect the unexpected. Gary

 

Note to self: Never own a trailer without tire stops on the deck. I've pushed a car off the front of a trailer before. Luckily, the oil pan landed on the winch before the car smashed the tailgate of my haul truck. DOH!!

Lots of air in the tires,make sure the brakes are loose. I have used gravity to my advantage. I would rather push a car 200 feet across level ground to the nearest downhill then try and push it 20 feet up a trailer. My friend and I just pushed a mini van with 2 flat tires onto his trailer,and it had ramps with the bars not smooth. We dragged it with a chain to the nearest hill,then took the chains off,moved the truck and trailer about 100 feet down the road and got up a good head of steam.Whompa whampa whamp! The hardest part was stopping it when it got to the top of the trailer. I have a small trailer hitch ball type winch bolted to the floor of my enclosed trailer. It is slow as snot,but will get any job done as long as you dont mind taking your time. I used rathet straps to load my 73 Firebird onto my enclosed trailer all by myself. Again it took a lot of time and effort,but I could have loaded a tank on there if I took my time.

I've got a 1 ton chain hoist that I have pulled several cars and trucks up on trailers and tow dollys. You do have to pull it a few feet, block and pull some more but it gets it up there without straining a gut. Mine will move it about six feet at a time which is a lot further than the ratchet straps will do.
