I did some searching on here (and the entire web for that matter) to try and find a sound clip of someone running the real long Thrush gl***packs. I am considering these for my build and was wondering if anybody on here has first hand experience with them.

They are a 40" case and 45" overall. They will be behind an early 70's Ford 360 and I want a nice rumble at idle with a mellow tome when under a load without all the poppy crackly rap you get with the short gl***packs.

I am running one of them on my '50 Chevy Sedan Delivery behind a 401 Nailhead. Since there is no room for duals due to the wierd gas tank I installed a 2-1/2 single exhaust. Dont have a sound clip but its too quiet for me. I'm hoping it will get louder with age. Does have a mellow tone just to dang quiet

If you get the time, would you mind trying to get a sound clip of how it sounds. From your description, they may be too quiet for what I am looking for too.

I hope to make a decision by Monday or Tuesday and order up a pair of what ever I decide on.

Thanks for the imput guys. So far, I think trying to come up with the right muffler for the exhaust has been one of the hardest decisions to make on the truck.

Running a gl***pack on a single exhaust is a lot different than with duals,a lot less noise and no crackle, usually.
In my opinion, nothing sounds better than dual gl***packs and four or five feet of tail-pipe.:D
I would stay away from the mufflers with the louvred core,ie Cherry Bombs, seems like they tend to ''whistle''a bit. Mufflers with a perforated core seem to flow better and sound better to me.

I've been wanting to try a set of Porters.

I like the sound of gl***packs also, just trying to decide if the 40 incher's are too long. This truck will be my daily driver and I am not looking for much of the cackle, just the nice low rumble of a gl***pack or other straight through design muffler. Choices, choises, choices.......

one thing to factor in is the type manifolds or headers . manifolds drop some sound , and how much tail pipe, the longer the pipe the quieter . and if its had a bigger cam. a freind on mine has 26 inch thrush on his 56 f100 . sbc with a cam and cast manifolds . had them run out the rear , wasnt loud enough for him . then dumped out the sides in front of the wheels. sounds good now . bends over axles kill some sound along with longer pipes. ive got generic gl*** packs on my 55 ford with a 302 26inchers and pipes out the back , kinda quiet . but there just starting to get burned in and sounding better. nice quiet rumble while cruising in overdrive. nice quiet tone at idle. i hate rapy exhaust . and if they get that way there gone.

Porter is a H.A.M.B. alliance member and I just checked their web-site out again.
They have a bunch of sound clips, might want to them out.

Anyone know if they use a perforated core or louvred?

The core of the porters are a coil spring, that spirals the exhaust out.

I listened to the Porters, they sound great, but they cost double what the Thrush's cost. A set of Porters would run about $180-$190 to my door. I truely understand you get what you pay for, but this is going to be done on a tight budget for now. I live in Alaska and it will cost between $35-$60 to ship 2 gl***packs up here depending in what I get. Exhaust shops up here are rediculous, I was quoted $500-$800 for straight pipes from the manifolds back to behind the rear tires. I can get two 23" Thrush's shipped for about $80 total and I might just have it exit in front of the rear tires angled towards the back just to save some money for now.

Edit - I will be running stock manifolds for a while, so that will also cut the sound down a bit. I personally like loud exhaust as long as it sounds good. But now that I live where I do, I have to be careful. We have about 4 cops that live in my neighborhood, which I don't mind.

Do you have Thrush for sure,or Smithy's?
I didn't think thrush made the ''coffee can'' style any more.
I'd love to still be able to buy those,or are Smithy's the same thing?

On our 51 Chevrolet Bus Coupe, with a mild 350, build Powerglide trans/converter, and 4.88:1 rear end gears, we used 96 Caprice LT1 exhaust manifolds running to 36 inch long gl*** packs, into end-at-the-bumper tail pipes. It sounds GOOD! My younger brother had a LONG bed 56 Chevy truck, with a stock 283 and Muncie 4-speed. It had Hedman headers going into 40 inch gl*** packs, and full length tail pipes. It was the best sounding exhaust I've heard. I think it was the long gl*** packs and really long tail pipes that gave it that sound. Butch/56sedandelivery.

pipe diameter changes everything also. 2" duals give you a real good crack when you stand on it and good rumble at idle. Wider pipes will be way more mellow with the same length muffler

Looks like I'll either be getting the long Thrush gl***packs or a pair of oval Magnaflow mufflers. Thrush's will run about $143 to my door and the Magnaflow's will run about $130 to my door. Either way, I'll try and post a sound clip when it's finished, but that'll be 2-3 months down the road most likely. Thanks for all the imput and ideas. I still wish I could hear a sound clip of the 40" long Thrush gl***packs.

  20. Bake them in a oven then throw them in a tube of water..

I'm hoping that with running 2-1/2" pipe and putting them as far back as possible, I will get rid of some of the high pitched blap blap blap blap blap and have more of a mellower lower tone. I guess we'll see.

Well after a bunch of searching and listening, I decided to order a pair of 14" long Magnaflow ovals. With these being only 14" long, it will be easy to swap out to a different muffler / gl***pack if I decide it's not the sound I'm looking for.

I know this was not for a "HAMB friendly" project, so I thank you all for putting up with me.
