I putting the disc brake kit on my f1 axle and it will be awile before the rest of the car is done.I have to move the frame aroung some, hence installing the rotors for now. The rotors are covered in a light oil now that they came with, but I don't think it will last before it dries out . Does anyone worry about how rusted their rotors will get before it's driven? So I had a few options possibly, wheel bearing grease? but i'm worried about penetration into the rotor if it would be any differant than the oil on their now? Or spray bomb the rotors with paint or primer, it would be easier to clean off than rust. I've installed some factory replacement rotors that came with some type of gray coating. I thought it might have been some type of primer, and it came off with some brake cleaner. If it comes to it i'll just pull the rotors back off and put them back in the box. I'm only worried about this till the car gets driven and the pads and rotors get seated in together. It would be silly to pull the rotors every winter, I just want to wait to leave them on after it's driven.
GIBBS! This stuff rocks, I use it all the time for keeping bare metal clean, and it's a great penetrating oil. Plus, unlike regular penetrating oils, it does not mess with paint! http://getgibbs.com/
gibbs like mentioned above, wd-40 if you keep at it every month or so, light coating of oil, forget the name of it but there is a light wax spray on coating that OEM used for years... Paint works then just sand off the pad surfaces when you are ready. Plus you get nice prepped looking rotors to boot!
If it's not sitting out side like a moth balled battleship and rusts like one I wouldn't worry about it. Brake pads will scrub them clean.
I work for a new car dealer (Ford) i'm trying to avoid "lotrot" . It will be parked inside though, I think a light coat of paint or get ahold of the Gibbs.
I have no garage, I built my car in the driveway. For a year and a half, it sat outside like a moth balled battleship, but the first time I got it on the road, all the rust came off almost immediately....slick as snot shortly thereafter, and almost as shiny.
Use metal prep, which is an acid, it "pickles" the surface and retards rust, but leaves no oil to foul the pads. Dave
Deal with the "lotrot" as you say. I would be extremely hesitant to apply anything to my braking surfaces. The pads truly will wear off the rust in a heartbeat.
DO NOT PUT OIL OR PAINT OR TAPE OR ANY OTHER **** ANYWHERE NEAR BRAKE ROTORS OR DRUM SURFACES !!!! I wonder about folks sometimes! . Want to stop them rusting? don't fit them!,keep them under your bed in plastic bag. SHEEIT! how ****ing long does it take to fit a ****ing rotor! 10 minutes??!! .
