  1. I thought I was the only guy who hates that phrase.

  2. I was an asphalt roller operator for 25 or so years, I have seen a steam roller, but never ran one. I did run a Buffalo-Springfield that was so old and worn out I joked that it had been converted from steam to gas.

"Rare" is the most over cooked term in the car hobby. 31 Vicky's were "rare" when I was 16 and that was 50 yrs ago. I guess they're incinerated now?

Not sure if anyone said this yet but "You'll never see another like it around!"

Yeah... that's because it's a rusted out worn out POS with 200 pounds of poly filler in it and you put Walmart hubcaps and stick on hood scoops on it, nobody else is going to do something that horrible!

And whenever I see "Rat Rod" in an eBay title I am nearly 100% sure it's actually a car that is too far gone to be good for anything that is also overpriced!

About a year ago my wife drags me to some fund raiser for the Boys and Girls club. I sit down with a guy in his early 50's and we proceed to start talking about the weather, sports, the economy, etc. Somehow the topic turns to cars and I tell him I am really into hot rods. He proceeds to tell me he has owned several hot rods in his life. At this point I think " Fantastic! I have found one of my kind". He then proceeds to tell me about all the Mustangs and Camaros he has owned. I let it slide, because it's not worth arguing about. He then asks me about my car and as I describe it to him he looks down his nose at me and says real condescendingly "Oh, so you have rat rod". This time I did'nt let it slide and replied, "People who have no idea what a real hot rod is might say that". I then excused myself to the bar. You just can't argue with ignorance.

I saw a car advertized as "Original" and "Survivor". Turns out it was nosed, decked, painted, lowered, reupholstered and had an engine/tranny swap. Guy said it was a "Original" because it was modified back in the 50s and "Survivor" because it's been around so long. What do you guys think of the description "Survivor" and what does it mean to you?

I believe "Survivor" describes an unrestored car in very-good to excellent condition that is factory original.

Survivor to me needs more clarification as in original survivor or survivor custom.

I have had two people in the last month come to look at a car of mine. The first guy as soon as he walked up said "I have been unemployed for 8 months, hopefully I will find a job soon so I could buy your car" Okay dude hit the bricks. Another guy brought his old extended family "I dont have room for another car but my dad use to have one of these so the family wanted to come see it" Like I dont have better things to do than be Willy Wonk and give a fucking tour!. Sorry rant over. NO TIRE KICKERS!! NO DREAMERS!! Bring a trailer or another driver with you:mad::)

One thing that really drives me crazy is when people attach "32 Ford" to everything.

I can see why someone might do it with hot rod parts, like '40's Juice brakes, or solid axles. . . but when I search eB*y for a "32 trunk lid" and get "1955 Ford Trunk Lid, 32 Ford" it drives me up a wall.

You can't use a '55 deck lid on a '32, stop doing that shit you hear me! YOU HEAR ME!

It just makes me have to look through a long list of stuff I can't use.

  19. Survivor to me means that it hasn't met with the crusher yet.
It could be in mint condition or a basketcase or somewhere in between .. :D

People I go to school with think that every fenderless car is a Rat Rod, and if you explain that a Rat Rod is a hunk of junk, they then think that you no longer like old cars. Then if you try and fix their judgement they say that you are ignorant.

"restored to original" an impossibility; either it is original, or it is restored, but it cannot be both.

"mint" is supposed to mean as if just made, few used things in the world qualify.

"$xx,xxx invested" few hobby cars are investments, just because you spent too much doesn't mean I am going to.

I just saw an ad on CL that was two sentences of description, a price, and a phone number, and then THIRTY-SIX lines of keywords.

I was looking for a Corvair steering box, and the ad was for a Honda engine block.

I have to support the overuse of the term NOSS.

As stated a few times before, it's Nitrous, NO2, Gas, Juice, Drugs, Giggle, Shot... etc. Just not NOSS. I fully support the right to stop talking to and walking away from folks who use this term. I equally support the right to assume the person who uses this term knows little about cars other than what they saw on Fast and Furious or what their ricer buddies have been using for terminology.

This one might piss off some folks and it might come across as being pretentious considering my own project and the label I have used for it but I'm really starting to have a hard time with the term "Gasser" being applied to anything with a straight axle.

If you are going to throw a straight axel under your pre-69 style car and race it in a current nostalgia Gasser class, ok it's a Gasser. If you are replicating or restoring a Gasser that has any sort of history or heritage, ok, it was a Gasser back then and it's still a Gasser now.

If you are imitating a Gasser from back in the day I'm more inlclined to use the term "Gasser Style" If you're going to street drive it or pose with it then it's "Gasser Style". On the other hand I see no harm in calling them Gassers for short. (Nothing like creating your own circular arguement huh ??)

My own project was a street racer that was built when the gasser classes were on their way out and it was never raced in a class. At least not a Gasser class. It has a lot of history and heritage and certainly could have been a Gasser if it had complied with some sort of wieght break. Seriously, it had all the components. Straight axle, old school Pontiac rear, engine set back and big ol Hemi with a Torqflite. But it was a Street Freak built in the same fashion as the killer race cars of the time. The same way the Pro-Street guys emulate Pro-Stock.

Is it a Gasser ? or just built Gasser Style ??
