Hey fella's has anyone here used the engine conversion mounts from Jamco Suspension to put in a SBC in a shoebox ford? I'm wanting to know if the oil pan kit that they offer to go with the mounts has any clearance issues from the cross link? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
i put a 265 in my 50, used the speedway tranny adapter and motor mounts, cut the cross link and dropped the center a couple of inchs, works great
couple of reasons, plan on driving mine everywhere, 500 miles just this past weekend only reason i pulled the flathead was for reliability issues, second reason had the 265.
i did! worked out just fine! mine came with a small block, so i got an early nova oil pan to clear the center link! if you have a flathead i wouldnt get rid of it. but if cost is a factor, then i would do it.
Every time my flathead gives me issues, I think about going to a sbc, then I regain consciousness and fix the flatty and remain the shit, haha. However, if it did ever shoot the bucket all the way like past rebuild for cheap, id go sbc because I a in fact am cheap.
I ran a flat head for 20 years and it never over heated. if you run thermostats it slowes down the flow, gives the coolant a chance to cool going through the radator. I don't think it cost more to put a sbf in.
Just look for a Ford engine and do the shoebox the right way ! I have a 49 & 50 Fords and neither one have an engine , yet . BOTH will have a 289 or 302 ! That is just the way it should be ! But in the end it's your car not mine . Retro Jim
i love how people hate chevy motors or hate ford! ive had both, and i think it comes down to taking care of what you drive!
heres the deal , if you got a ford , use a ford motor . You got a CHEVY , use a chevy motor. None of this inbred stuff. And besides .....chevy rules. "AND THE BOWTIE ROLLS ON"
Maybe your friends need to learn how to build shit? The gentleman isn't asking if you like a sbc in a 50 ford,he is asking if the parts he mentioned will work.
Like they didnt drive them everywhere from 1932 till 1953,where do people come up with this crap? i have owned a flathead for years, driven the crap out of it and has never overheated and is more reliable than most engines ,these things are work horses.DO the damn engine right and it will serve you right...bottom line..Bowties are for dinner suits flatheads are for fords
the guys in the land down under, question is how expensive is it to have a flathead built? and whats the cost compared to having a small block be it ford of chevy done???? i dont live there so i hope an ausi could chime in on this topic? i would do a flathead if i could, but mine came with a chevy and it works great. if i had more coin to drop, i would do a flathead in a heart beat!
big creep i cant answer the question,i dont live in australia any more,i live in san diego for along time now.But what i can tell you is that you have to import flathead stuff and it can be expensive but now the american dollar and the australian dollar are equal,it will get cheaper.Basically doing anything in australia is expensive.
man our dollar is sinking faster than the titanic! yea i have a buddy who lives down under, i need to visit while i still can.
You'd think they put small block Chevys in them from 32 to 53.... I guess over 20 years on an engine makes it "unreliable". I've often thought of taking a lot of classic Chevys and putting in Ford engines just for fun!
come on guys, i run flatheads in my 40 coupe and my 29 roadster. Driven them both well over a hundred miles from home, but ive driven my 265 powered 50 to austin and back without a worry. lose a waterpump on a flat motor in the middle of no where , your shit-outta-luck small block ford or chevy can get one any where. Its just a matter of parts availability.Drove my 50 over 400 miles this weekend with no worry at all, if i was driving the 29 or 40 would have been sweating it all the way. Ain't no deal, dealers choice.
Hell, just to get this off the topic more.....I'm going with a '53 331 Cad motor and probably a Lasalle tranny in my shitbox! The classic Fordillac and from the little books I've read it was a popular early engine swap.
I can't get a flathead for $300 at just about any yard, and be on my way in short order, after a total failure on the road. Maybe they are cheaper where you guys are. If you already have a flathead, then by all means, run it. If you don't, and also don't have a small mountain of cash, then run what you can afford. Check with member hottweelz
I've had a ZZ3 crate motor in my shoebox for more than 15 years. Not very high on the coolness index, but it runs well and fast, and has been very reliable. I have also had generally good luck with Jamco equipment; if you get in touch with them I'm sure they will give you the straight poop regarding pan clearance.
I'm going to be running a 365 caddy in my 50 shoebox. My shoebox had it installed in the 60's and then it got neglected, time to bring it back to life!
Can anyone answer the guy without giving him the ruin your Ford with a Chevy engine. When is that ever going to end? I can bet that half of the most beautiful shoeboxes here have a Chevy in them.
I just had a good stare at the oil pan kit on their website. What appears there is a FRONT SUMP conversion pan, re-oriented "shorty" oil pump, and a matching pickup, etc. It looks a lot like early Chevy II stuff. A regular SBC pan has a rear sump. You will need this, unless you want to do a whole bunch of fab.
